DBS Find

Came across this DBS in a friends basement, left by a previous tenant, and I inherited it when he moved out. I know they're sort of Norway's version of Huffy, but I'm wondering how common they are in the US?

The rebuild is underway, and I'm cleaning and re-greasing all bearings and shining up all the chrome and aluminum. I'm considering re-painting the frame, but I'm afraid to cover up something that shouldn't be covered up. The paint is very worn, but it's still rather neat. Any thoughts? What approaches have you taken with unique, but obviously worn original paint?

I have almost the exact bike....paint is worn awfully, it was flaking off when i cleaned it...I was as gentle as possible with it, and put a few layers of wax on it...the chrome and aluminum cleaned up nicely with fine steel wool and WD 40 on the chrome and hoppes semichrome polish and a soft rag on the aluminum. I don't think they are worth a whole lot, but they are nice large(but heavy) , comfortable bikes.and mine is a 3 speed with drum brakes .mine is around a 1964 and has the same seat , rack and tool box....heres a few pictures of mine all cleaned up...

I saw yours when I was searching around for DBS posts. Cleaned up nicely!
You're right about them being large and comfy. I'm a tall guy, but I have plenty of room.
Mine's a single speed with a coaster brake in the rear, and one of those neat drum brakes in the front. I'm a big fan of the racks, too.
I might just wash and wax the frame like you did for now. I really like old paint, so maybe I'll even throw a clear coat on it to preserve the original color scheme.....but I'm also tempted to paint it black with brown leather.
