Curious Nitto stem

I recently bought a 1985 bike with this on it. It's unmarked, other than "Nitto". I've never seen one with this cutout before. Any ideas as to what model it is?

I'm betting it was made that way and that the hole originally contained a piece of plastic with a logo on it. My Cinelli 1-R stem has that.

Could be. Though it's in kind of an odd spot for a missing cap. Plus, there are no marks to indicate that anything has been there. Here's another view.

I have a Suntour Superbe stem that has a cut out like that but mine has groves on the sides.

Does not look like the Cinelli version.

But I like it alot.

Does the slot correspond to a bored out hole in the neck of the stem, immidiately reverse of the slot?

What? For mounting a bayonet or something?

That's funny. There's no hole in the stem itself. The only other marking, other than size info and insertion line is "s.s"

I cannot recall the manufacturer, but there was one particular stem supposedly produced in this fashion. The drilling was for weight, the hole was for the bored access.

Looks very similar to the SR super light (can't remeber the correct name) but the clamp is wrong.....
