just bought at a garage sale. could anybody tell me what this bike cost new. also looking for a few part,s tire,s chain, etc

The MB-5 was the lowest end Bridgestone as I recall, with the MB-1 being the highest end. Not sure on the new cost. As far as new parts, hit up the bike shop. Any 26" tire and 7spd chain will work on it.

I believe Bridgstone did have an MB-6 which was their lowest end. The MB-5 was a DeoreLX/DeoreDX equipped bike I believe and depending on the year, retailed for around US$550. A very fine mid-level bike. My suggestion would be a SRAM PC-58 chain and 26x1.95 fast rolling tyres for cross-country riding. Pick up some spare DeoreDX or DeoreXT top-mount thumbshifters where you can find them. DeoreII top mount thumbshifters should work too.

I bought one new in '93? At the time it cost a little over $500. The MB-5 was Bridgestone's entry level bike for many years, but they eventually came out with an MB-6

I bought one in 92. I loved to ride it, but it was a heavy bike for rough mtn biking. I got it for a $585 -
in 2003, I thought I had no space in my house, and I gave it away as a housewarming gift....but today I miss my bike. They do not make them in the states anymore... Ended up with a Gary Fisher bike. But I wonder whether this one will last as many moves as my old bridgestone.

They are very repairable. Tire will be $20, parts and chain will not cost more than $100

And the way the gears are made, you can do everything yourself.

Thought I would dredge up this thread rather than start up a new one...

Last night a bike collector friend gave me a '92 MB-6 (he was cleaning out his garage), black with teal-colored decals. The bike is in excellent condition but not perfect, almost no paint scratches and decals are not scratched at all. Bike is also all original, down to the Ritchey Force tires which don't look like they have been ridden at all and they are not at all dry-rotted. All that's missing is the saddle, crank and pedals, and rear derailler.

I know this is the lowest level Bridgestone MTN bike but it still cost $400 new and it was made during the "Grant Peterson" years. Should I go to the trouble of finding these original parts (would it be worth it?) or just get modern replacements that are decent quality? I was thinking of selling it since it might be to little for me (42cm), but I'm not sure.

It would be tough to find the correct parts, but fairly easy to find age-appropriate replacements that look like they belong there. It will cost you more than the bike is worth, though.

If it were mine, I'd put it on eBay as is and hope to get $100 for it.

It was made during the "Grant Peterson years", but that model was tig welded in Taiwan.

If I learned anything from Carl Sagan its that time is a human construct and is meaningless in a cosmic sense.
