Stem Modification

I really like the looks of the original Cinelli stem that came on my Raleigh USA Team Pro. However the darn thing is lacking in height. Is there a safe way to cut and add a 2-4cm section to the steerer tube portion? I have access to a machine shop, mig and tig welders. Not sure if its do-able. Lp

********** If height is that u need you are better geting a 1 inch threadless adapter and putting a threadless stem i there.

but OP likes the look of the cinelli stem. try a Nitto Technomic

There are stem extenders available. http://harriscyclery.net/itemdetails.cfm?ID=1884

I'd get a longer stem rather than try and add height to one. eBay is a good place to find old stems. Nitto Technomic stems look great and are plenty long.

I have Nitto Technomic on the bike. I may have a go at it in the shop. I would think with a quality weld and the inernal compression/wedge/cone bolt the lower portion would be plenty strong. Lp

???

either way, welding bits onto your steer tube and stem doesn't seem to be the greatest idea, but good luck nonetheless

I'd think long and hard about it. You do not want a stem to fail at speed. The results range from unpleasant to downright catastrophic.

Get another, longer stem. You may be right, but it really is not worth risking being wrong.

Still wonder why he needs to go even more uppright... if that's the case better buy a Chopper stem and handlebar and put a banana seat in the bike. Nothing is more upright than that :P

I have all the height I could need from the Nitto. Wish I could have the same from the OEM Cinelli.

Ultraman ---- thats just sick.

Just saying it would be nice if the old school stem had a wee bit more height adjustment. Lp
