Saddles
Anyone out there know the "original equipment" saddle found on a Phillips 3-speed era mid-sixties through mid-seventies? I can't imagine that it was a Brooks saddle as this was a pretty low-end bike after Phillips was bought out by Raleigh or so I hear.

Brooks made some rather forgettable mattress saddles in that era. Wrights also was still making saddles then also. I'm not certain what they actually had though - so this is just idle speculation.

Thanks for the input.

This may or may not be correct, but it's worth a look:

Sprung vinyl mattress saddles were common on 3-speeds of that era - some made by Brooks and Wrights as Zorro mentioned. There is a vinyl Brooks mattress on my '71 Triumph 3-speed, which was a mid-level bike from a company also bought by Raleigh. I think your Phillips is probably pretty comparable to my bike, but I'm not positive.

My bet is on the Brooks mattress. Here is a picture of a '72 Phillips that I came across last summer - pretty sure it was entirely original...

This vintage Phillips hangs in "The Bike Stand" shop at 4th & Adams in Olympia, WA. This is my only picture and it doesn't show the saddle well, but if I remember correctly, it has a leather, swallow type saddle. Possibly not original to the bike. I'm sure you could contact the proprietor, Bill Stevenson for more details on this bike. Don

Wow! Thanks everybody. I think I'll start searching for a Brooks mattress.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...S/IMG_5842.jpg The saddle that is stock is HORRIBLE. Christ, I have never been more uncomfortable. The way those springs massaged my butt...they should have bought me dinner or something:lol: If you're going to do any riding on it, do yourself a favor, and don't get it. If you want my old seat though, I'll send it to you for the cost of shipping. KJevin |
Probably a Brooks or Wright plastic mattress style saddle. However the leather Brooks would probably have been an option they were fairly cheap back in the day (B72 or B66 would be appropriate and you could transfer it to another bicycle if you sell that one so the price is not terrible).
