Today I took it to a local frame builder to have the top tube replaced and he refused to do a internal cable for the rear brake. So in order to restore it to it's correct state I'm going to keep looking for someone to replace the tube that wouldn't have a hang up with putting the holes in the top tube.
Any ideas? I'm in San Francisco.

ok, first number tells me it was built in 1987, probably in January. I know of Circle A Cycles who could probably do the job correctly but they are nowhere near you (Rhode Island). Take a look at the restoration they did here: http://www.circleacycles.com/brian/2...0/ay-gios-mio/

Hi guys,another Gios compact owner here. My serial is 702120 so I guess a Feb. '87 model. It looks like the decals have been replaced so I might look into getting hold of some originals. Also, there is no tubing decals as there either wasn't any to start with or they were lost when the new decals were applied. Does anyone know what tubing my frame is likely to be built from given it's time of production? It has the funky holes in the toptube if that helps any!

From what I have read here it looks like mine was made in early '87 but the original owner has put the older super record decals on it. I haven't yet decided whether to change the decals or not as I quite like them, plus I originally thought it was an early 90s frame so have a 2nd gen c-record group to go on, so it won't be period correct anyway! Thanks for the offer though and I'll give you a pm if I decide to change the decals.

I emailed Alfredo had he got back to me confirming it's about 20yrs old and he reckons made out of Columbus Sl or SLX, anyone have a similar age one or who knows what it will be made from for sure? I don't want to put a columbus decal on if it isn't!

from the research I've done, I am 99% sure the tubing is Columbus SLX. The giveaway is the serial number and the fact that your frame does not have screws for second bottle cage, clear indication that this is an earlier model. Your decals should look similar to the decals on the fork.

Real interesting part for me is the cable guide on the lug of the top tube, I've never seen it before...anyway, let me know if you want the decals.

I rode a Gios Compact Pro for about 3 years, 10,000+ miles. I got mine new from Excel Sports, the sole US importer for Gios. It was a great bike but mine was a little too small for me, so I eventually sold it and replaced with a Merckx Corsa. The quality of finish on mine was incredible, with no paint chips or rust after 3 years of regular riding. It rode very nice and had perhaps the best fork (the chrome) of any bike I have ridden, but handling was twitchy compared to my Merckx. You definitely did not ride that bike with your hands off the handlebar.

Nice Gios Joe1983! I really like the housing rings on the headtube to protect the paint: a nice touch. Also it seems you have an extra (compared to mine) set of numbers and a "V" (?) on the BB.

A good way to tell if it is SLX is to remove the BB and look for helical ridges in the tubes joining the shell. For the record my '88 compact is in Oria Ranf: also with ridges but they are straight and run the whole lenght of the seat tube (at least).

Cheers Tuz, I had a feel for any ridges and couldn't find any so guess it's Columbus SL. Yeah I hadn't seen the housing rings before either to be honest. In the next week or so I should have it built up with full C-Record so I'lll post some pics of the finished build then.

heres a pic, just picked it up off of ebay. was looking to do a complete repaint and excel could get the period correct decals. i decided to just clear coat the frame to preserve the character of the frame. its sl, i think it came stock with campy croce d'aune? there are a few pieces left but mostly suntour superbe stuff from here and there as parts wore out and then dura ace 7810 hubs. im actually saving up for next years sram force and want the gios to be my dedicated crit bike.

I think that Gios looks spectacular. I have a period correct decal set for that bike (see my post #15) and I can send them to you, but remember it's a scan so you would have to work on the image to get it to print quality.

I am in a similar predicament as several of you in this thread. My wife has a 55 cm Gios Compact which she loves because it fits her so well. She bought it used and it had been repainted red but with the "Gios Torino" decals....these must have been more readily available that the correct ones. We want to restore the bike to "original condition" with the period correct Campy Chorus gruppo. The serial number is 720168 and Gios responded to my email saying only that the frame had been built in Feb 1987 but that they were uncertain of the original color. I am assuming that it was probably blue, possibly red, no other color seems likely. I am planning to have Franklin Frames do the paint (they did a superb job on my 1989 Pinarello Montello a few years ago) but I think the dacals will be tough. Any ideas ? I could try Cyclomondo or JRrestore. Also, should I assume that the tubing is Columbus SLX ?

John, it's safe to assume it is Columbus SLX as this is what they used for that year (I have seen only one Gios Compact with Columbus SL so far). Later on, in '89. through '91 they sourced tubing from Oria (mine is such frame).

I just found this old thread and was wondering if anyone has info on my Gios. It's a Gios Compact Plus. Anyone know what the differences are between it and the normal Compact or Pro?

It's built with Oria RANF tubing. The serial # indicates production in Jan '89. Interestingly the colour, which I believe is original, is purple.

It also doesn't have the cable running in the top of the toptube, but rather in the bottom and out the top/side with no rubber grommets.

Any info would be much appreciated.

... the cable routing looks to be the only difference, never seen that or the color before though. Cool.

Talking about the cable routing: has anyone ever tried to find replacement rubber inserts for the top tube cable routing? Mine are torn badly which is a shame on a bike otherwise in mint condition (the light blue one at the start of the threat).

Hi Guys,

I restored my wife's 1987 Gios Compact (with much appreciated help from Nenad).
I have lots of computer scans of decals which I can share, Greg Softley sells them on ebay. he did mine for me. As far as the rubber inserts, I used the ones made by cinelli which are identical. The older ones like my wife's had top tube inserts and this allowed
water to seep in with sometimes disastrous results (did not happen on my wife's but have seen a few destroyed like this). Moving it below obviously helped.
