Test your C&V perception

I have no idea what this is yet, currently in phone-tag mode about it, hopefully will find out today if it isn't gone already. If I find out I missed out I'll followup and leave the question unanswered. I'll dig something out of my basement to send the first winner if I do get it.

As near as I can tell is it might have downtube shifters, looks sort of like 700c wheels, does not appear to have turkey wings on the brakes, looks like a big plastic pie plate, a 3-piece crank, probably a double on front, maybe 7-speed spacing on back, singlepivot sidepull brakes, alloy hubs maybe, possibly a 54-56 ctc frame, probably a kickstand mounting plate across the chainstays, and aero style brake levers. Beyond that and the downtube name appearing fairly short I have no idea what it is. Doesn't appear to be a Schwinn, and probably not a Magna.

Sure hope I get to find out what it is, which will mean I got it, hopefully....

Nishiki? I'd have said Norco but you are in the US.

norskagent 01-08-09 02:04 PM

lotus?

mkeller234 01-08-09 02:05 PM

Hah, for a second there I thought that car tire was mounted on the front....

mkeller234 01-08-09 02:06 PM

Is that a turbo saddle? (if that is even the correct name for it)

rotharpunc 01-08-09 02:13 PM

centurion? looks like it deff. has DT shifters and aero levers

cudak888 01-08-09 02:22 PM

Lotus. Logo has the pink flower in the "U."

Seems to have a unicrown fork though, which I find a bit odd - most were crowned.

But I've never seen a Centurion with a seattube that does not compliment the headtube.

^^thats what I thought too. maybe a nishiki?

plodderslusk 01-08-09 03:07 PM

I'll put my dime down for KHS.

-holiday76 01-08-09 03:23 PM

yup, looks like a bike.

treebound 01-08-09 03:27 PM

Well the sad news is that apparently I'm second in line for it, finally got a callback via email. I did ask what brand it is so hopefully I'll be able to answer that question.

kbjack 01-08-09 03:30 PM

I'd third Lotus. Here's a similar one posted in CL/ebay finds:

I still maintain 100% that it is a Lotus.

If I get it I hope you're right.
If I don't get it then I hope it's a Huffy. :D

I'll post the details of the deal once the dust from the rush has settled on it.

Whatever it is, the last rider ONLY rode in the drops by the angle of them.

USAZorro 01-08-09 04:19 PM

I think it's a Miyata or a Centurion

treebound 01-08-09 04:28 PM

Well not looking good for me to get it, she just updated her CL post with the following:

5). Older 10 speed bike. (Pic attached)
Dan to pick up Thursday afternoon
She did reply to my email and said that she doesn't know what brand name the bike is, bummer.

Late last night I saw a new posting in the Free section of the local CL for tons of free stuff, and the bike in question was buried in the listing. I sent an email, then left a couple of voice messages, then another email. She was overwealmed (sp?) with responses for all her stuff and is in the process of getting ready to move on top of it all, plus some other stuff that I won't get into that I read and also discovered.

So, "Dan", if you're one of the local bikeforums people, could you let us know what the bike really is?

I'll have to agree with the Lotus guestimate due to the red coloring in the name on the downtube.

I'm still going to drive past her house in the morning on the way in to work however since she did tell me in her email that if the bike is still there in the morning then I can have it. (Hope is still alive, chances are slim, but hope is still there.)

Good deals are where you find them, but sometimes you end up second in line. :notamused:

Oh well , I think I'll visit a couple of thrift shops on the way home and see what they have.

The only Nishiki that I've seen with an insert (that pink thing) in the decal were the three years Nishiki put a rectangular box through the end of the decal. IMHO, that's not a Nishiki. I thougth the Lotus guess was incorrect, then I looked at my Challanger. Sure enough, there's a flower in the next to the last letter, the "U". I'm going with Lotus.

mkeller234 01-08-09 07:18 PM

^ SERIOUSLY! I don't understand why that didn't occur to her, maybe she has too much to deal with?? I have called on mystery bike ads before and had to beg them to please read the decal, or head tube or anything and some people don't seem to understand why it's important.

I am going to post an CL ad that just says "Car - werx good" ....forget the details what does it matter? Yugo, Corvette, it's all the same anyway.

I'm guessing a Nishiki Sport Equipe. On that color frame, there was a pink word, either "Equipe" or "Sport" The brakes, bar tape, saddle, and rim type is correct. The early models had 27" with 7-sp SIS shifters, stem mounted. The later ones had DT shifters and 700c.
