fork information

I would like to find a fork for my bike but I don't know enough to figure how to size it and what to ask for. I am relluctant to try and match paint so I guess I am limited to chrome..which would be OK with me if it is available.

What measurments to I need, and how do you take them?

If someone has a fork that I would be interested in PM me.

Thanks

Mike

You need to know the following:

For a 27" or 700c wheel
Length of the steerer tube needed (measured from the top of the fork crown to the top of the steerer)
Length of the threaded portion of the steerer needed

That's mostly it. If you're trying to replace the fork on an old French bike, you have a few more things to worry about. If you want to fit a fender, it would be good to have eyelets on the dropouts.

Thanks! Still need a little help with terms if you will..."steerer tube" and "fork crown" I think you are talking about the part that goes through the frame but you are dealing with Forrest Gump here when it comes to this so speak slowly :>) (at least I have my tire size!! 700c)

If someone helps him with sizing, I have 21 forks.

Do you have your old fork? Has it been removed from the bike?

If so measure the portion which runs through the frame and has threads on the top, this is the steerer tube. The fork crown is the top which holds the two legs of the fork together and joins to the steerer tube.

If you check out this listing you will see a good example of a fully exposed chrome fork.

I believe this is listed by our own Lynn Travers, aka CV-6.

Thanks Bob, that was very clear and the link to the chrome fork was helpful. I wish I could bid on that one but I can't get mine measured in time.

Robbie: we are sorta close and after I take measurments tomorrow night maybe you have what I need..would like to keep most purchases local (meaning this forum) if I could.

I'm going to need all the bearings and chrome stuff as well.

Thanks

My fork measures: 6 7/8" from crown to top of steerer tube, steerer tube is 1" OD, it is threaded for 1 5/8" from the top.

If anyone has a nice high quality vintage chrome fork that matches this get right back to me.

I think the fork that I am replacing is nice (was) the steerer tube is painted just like the frame including pin striping at the paint/thread juction. It has forged ends with a brazed on threaded boss for the
Jim Blackburn rack to thread into.

I would hope to find something at least as nice or hopefully better..must be vintage and have a little class..I know I don't.

For your future information: Measurement should be made in centimeters or millimeters (cm or mm). Rarely do you find bicycles, components measured in the imperial (English) system.

Happy Trails!

I meant: 174.625 mm from crown to top of steerer tube
25.4mm tube OD
41.275mm of thread from top of steerer tube

Threads are 24 TPI.......am I banned for that?

Nah. You'll just be water-boarded by Sheldon Brown's ghost.
