Well, the continuing search for a bike for my father has lead me to THIS BIKE.

It's a Trek 2120. Looks interesting. I think the seller is out of his mind asking $525. I'd put in an offer for $350 but really don't think it's worth much more than that depending on components.

I just want to be sure there aren't any known problems with them. I've heard that the first run of Specialized Allez Epics had to be recalled because of some problem with bonding in the lugs or some such. So I just wanted to be sure there are no problems to worry about with this Trek.

Early carbon Epics have issues. My lbs has several warranties in a room in their basement, because of unbonding. The Treks didn't seem to have any such problem, at least not enough to cause me to worry. I had a 2300 for quite a while, and the guy I sold it to is still riding it. The biggest challenge that I ran into was that the clearcoat peeled near the lugs. I lifted as much as I could get off of the tubes, and then used a small brush and some clear epoxy to replace the missing finish. Still looks like new!

I'll wait to hear back from the seller on a few questions, and if it's all good, I'll put in an offer for $350. Like I said, I think the $525 he's asking is nuts unless there is something special about this bike that I just don't know.

I sold mine, with a complete and nearly new ultegra group, for $350 a few years ago. It may have been worth a little more, but not, I think, that much. Good luck, that is a nice touring geometry and a good bike.

retrofit

I ride a '93 Trek 2300 and have had no problems and it has a nice ride. As luker said, some minor peeling of the clear coat, but some wet sanding has taken car of the rough edges and I plan on wet sanding the carbon tubes and re-clear coat when I repaint the aluminum sometime this spring.
