So Sheldon Brown paaes away, and is met at the pearly gates by St. Peter. Pete takes Sheldon on a tour of Heaven, and it's quite a tour: eveybike shop sells nothing but silk tubulars, and they are FREE!!! Eveyone has bikes made of fully butted Reynolds 531, and Campy Super Duper Record components. All bikes weigh only 5 pounds! It's a beautiful and inspiring sight. Over at the velodrome there's a guy on a really pretty hand made Schwinn Paramount track bike, only he's flying around the track about three feet off the boards, and really moving.
Sheldon asks Pete, "Say Peter, who is that?" Pete replies" "Oh, HIM?", "Why that's GOD!, he thinks he's Eddy Merckx" |
Sheldon, ride in peace and thanks for actually answering my letters.
|
ride on in the sky sheldon. thanks for all of your help along the way!! RIP

I was reviewing a copy of Barnett's Bicycle Manual & Sutherlands yesterday. I never would have begun DIY bike wrenching if I had to use those manuals. I'm glad that Sheldon put the same kind of knowledge but in a readable & easy to use form on his website.
From Barnett's on hub locknut adjustment: The adjustment procedure recommends using calibration stickers (BBI Hub Dial stickers). The stickers will be put on the hub to calibrate the adjustment. The surfaces must be grease-free for the stickers to stick well, particularly on the cone. Even if not using the stickers, it will be necessary to mark the hub in some way, so cleaning is still required. To check for friction, pretend you are a safecracker and the axle is the knob of a safe. Turn it slowly and smoothly, several revolutions in each direction. It should move with the gentlest pressure, Without any unevenness or binding. If you are not sure whether it is binding or not, try loosening one of the cones a bit. If it turns any easier, the previous adjustment was too tight. |
I had just arrived in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, on a business trip. I fired up my laptop, and of course went first to Bikforums to see what was up, when I saw the news of Sheldon's passing. Has it really been a whole year?
I still refer to his web pages on a regular basis. His presence and knowledge lives on... |
In mid 2004, when I went to downtown Boston for a trade show, I made a brief afternoon pilgrimage to West Newton via commuter rail. I got to check out Harris Cyclery, and I caught Sheldon for a few minutes while he was preparing for a trip to France. He had always answered my emails cordially and helpfully, and he never felt he had to impress anyone or to prove his own competence.

I only know Sheldon through his website, and came into the "cycling world" too late to see any real interaction with him, but his knowledge has been invaluable to me. Here's one person who will miss him even though I never really knew him.

I'm in the same boat as you Mickey. I never got to talk to Sheldon but I visit his site almost everyday. I'm sure he is watching over us and everytime we start to work on that vintage bike, he smiles, gives us a little pat and says "You can do it, go ahead."
I wonder what sheldon is riding in heaven? He would have his pick of bikes I'm sure. One-offs, so much chrome it's blinding, and Italian as far as the eye can see. What do you think he would pick? I'd like think he would say "Hey do you have a Raleigh Superbe, a box of parts and some tools?". Ride In Peace, Sheldon Mutt |

I did not know him, but I miss him nevertheless.
I am proud of how well the BF community has kept his spirit intact. jim |
His memorial is his website, still up and running. The author may be gone but the info on it will NEVER be dated! RIP, Sheldon Brown!
|
Well written Blue Order
You said everything I was thinking.
Guy |
I miss Sheldon too. I wish I could have met him.
If there is another memorial ride this year, I'd like to attend. |
just on his web site last night. It still amazes me that he took the time to answer so many questions personally.
