fixing a broken kickstand...
I have an eighties schwinn collegiate 3sp. Its a nice bike, everything's fine except for the kickstand. Its the basic crappy type with a metal sleeve brazed on the frame, kickstand comes out, theres a little nub sticking through a hole in the sleeve. I'm assuming thats what retains the kickstand in the sleeve, as there are no external fasteners.
Usually, the kickstand rotates forward and stops when it reaches vertical, but this one rotates freely 360 degrees. I can feel tension when it rotates to the correct position, but when I prop up the bike it ends up falling over. I would just hack off the sleeve but the fender tab mounted on it, so I'd rather just fix it or pull the arm out of the sleeve. Anybody have this problem before? |
You can buy all the parts to fix it. It is just worn out from age. I would suggest an older Schwinn dealer. Without the right tool to remove and replace the parts its a pain in the *** to do it. That is why you should find a dealer who still has parts to fix and repair it. By the way those type of kick stands were about the built ever made. Heavy but good. Roger

I always thought the kickstand was the best thing about those old Schwinns.

Sorry, this topic begs the question of why in the world you want a kickstand?

I removed the welded on on kickstand from my Twenty... it knocked a full pound off my bike.
They are solid but damn heavy too. |

The question is, why would you rather throw your treasured bike on the ground or prop it up against a tree? |
I agree, none of my bikes have them but they're certainly practical. Plus all the women bikers on C&V's that I know locally use them.

Luv my Kickstand.
Don't leave home without it..... |
First thing I take off is the kickstand, then the dork disk, then the chainring chain guard.
