Mavic Rim Identification Help

Anyone know what model these rims are? 20 mm width, 27", clinchers. Purportedly built up around 1972. What is shown in the pic is the only identification I've located:

That's the rim I have on my 1972 English tourer: 27", non-hook bead, very solid. I'm not sure of the model designation (if there was one).

didnt they call those ones " record du monde"

I could be wrong.

Those were called MAVIC "Red Label". This contrasts with the other model, the MAVIC "Yellow Label". I am not kidding. They were a very worthy rim in their day. I had many of them.

The rims on my Aerospace Pro have that same decal, but seem to be hooked .

They look similar to my Mavic Module E, which are 700c rims. Don't know if they made them in 27" or not.

I have a 27" rear just like that, has a green sticker, MA-2

I'd vote for Module E, which did come in 27" as well as 700C and would have had another sticker to the Left (where there *seems* to be a shiny patch in the pic) that gave the model name.
Just FYI to Mr. Mills: the Mavics with yellow labels were *very* early models, are you confusing with the much more commonly referred-to Fiamme Red and Yellow labels which ran concurrent to one another, both tubular rims: Red heavier, softer alloy, thicker wall; Yellow thinner wall, lighter, made with so-called "ergal" a stronger alloy thought to be like a modern 7000 series alloy.

Fiamme Red and yellow can refer to clincher rims too: they used a decal with a leaping horse: the tubular used a decal with a knights helmet. Don't know what the red clincher were, but the yellow were unferraled.

Don't know what the Mavic is, but I wish you could still buy em! I used Super Champion back in the day.

I am definitely confused. I apologize.

I have Module E in 27" 1 x 1/4 The sticker is part red(with Mavic on it) and part green(with the size info.)

While we are on the subject, what is the smallest 27" tire that will fit my rims that are 1 x 1/4?

unworthy1 02-17-09 01:02 PM

^ that's the later red/green label, the earlier ones had 2 labels. good point about the Fiammes coming as clinchers as well as tubbies, I never owned any of their early clinchers.

Correct. Mine have an all red Mavic label and a gold label that says Module E. For what it's worth, mine are on my Rauler, which I believe is from approx. 1973.

"smallest" is relative. if it's a clincher rim, and you can get a 27x1 to clinch, the tube will likely hold it on just fine. I've got 27x1 tires on my 27x1.25 S-A rims, no problems, and I'm using 700x18-26 tubes, too. It may blow up one day, but so far, so good.

Ok, I'm leaning toward Module E - these are hook beaded, the original owner had them built up in 1972. Interwebs tell me that Module E was one of Mavic's first hook beaded rim, and bibliobob sez early ones, like his from 1973, had the red label like mine w/separate Module E decal.

Going once, twice...
