Front Derailleur Compatibility

I just bought a Dura Ace FD-7400 from ebay. It was listed as a 6 speed derailleur, but I have an RD-7401 seven speed rear d and seven speed cassette. So, how does it know? Does the front d really care that I have seven speeds in back rather than six? As long as I have two chainrings up front, wouldn't that be okay?
