Oldish Schwinn Suburban rack question

2 Attachment(s)
Hi,
I got this crunched Schwinn Suburban for parts and it has an old rack on it. Does anyone know what the small saddle-like apendage is on it or what it was for? Was it to hold a pump or something?

Not sure what I'm going to put the rack onto yet but would like to incorporate the apendage by using it for something. Long term project, so far. Thanks for any ideas.

If you need better pics then it will have to wait. I dismantled the bike today so the rack is on the porch now. Rear derailer is destined to go onto a relative's dumpster-dived Roadmaster. The rest of the parts that are usable will probably be baggied until needed for something. My fingers are starting to get their feeling back, it was cold outside, but the old bike rack on the car makes for a good dismantling stand and the back of the car works well for a makeshift workbench.

My Dad sold Schwinn bikes for years and this is definitely a made for Schwinn rack that was sold by Schwinn dealers. I am racking my brains, but I think that the outer metal extrusion served no purpose except a safety feature to cover the spring for the rack. I do not believe that it was made to be a point to hang something from.

I saw one of these the other day. It was mangled beyond fixing as was the bike, but it was a Schwinn Suburban too.

Its where you attach your pipe, when not in use. The spring clamp holds your stash.

It was a "hook on side of carrier for hanging schoolbag, briefcase, etc.".
