cool trek I saw

Driving through town this afternoon I happened upon an older than me even gentleman riding a blue Trek. I rolled down the window and asked him what year it was and he told me it was about a 1990. It was dark blue with bar end shifters and looked like it would make a really great commuter. I have no idea what the model was but I want one NOW. So now I gotta ask if anybody has any idea what it might have been. It had fenders on it but I didn't get a good answer from him about what they were and if they were stock. Really a cool bike though.

Dark blue, or medium blue? Medium blue with white decals from 1990 would tell me Trek 400...
