What the heck is on this frame?

Hi,

This should be a really quick question for someone in the know. I'm thinking about purchasing this bike but what I'd like to know is what the heck is the black thing beneath the top tube. Is it a reinforcement indicative of damage?

Thanks.

It's a frame pump, and harmless, hell it even helps by pumping up your tires.

Looks like a nice Zefal pump, you should buy it just for that!

Pictures...

Ok, so I did pick it up. I was hoping that someone here could tell me a little about this bike as it doesn't seem to match any information I can find about Nishiki Prestiges (ie. wrong color scheme, tubing, components, etc). I'm guessing late 80's?

About the bike:

Tange #1 frame
4130 Chromoly Fork
Vetta Saddle
Shimano RX100 Brakes and Derailers
Araya 700cc rims with Shimano RX100 hubs
Sakae SR Handlebars

Oh, and the pump was a Zefel hpx4

To identify the year, look for the date codes on the Shimano parts. You should find two letters like 'LK' for example. Then go to https://www.vintage-trek.com/component_dates.htm to look it up. In the example above, LK indicates a November 1987 manufacture date. You can usually figure the bike was built a few months later.

Nice find! If that's a Zefal HP-X pump, you definitely want to keep it on the bike and use it.

+1

RX-100 was introduced around 1993 I believe, and produced until the late 90s.

Looks early 90s to me. Decal style and aero levers give it away.

Definitely a solid bike.

You should be quite pleased by the performance of the Prestige.

Nice catch!

Frame pump is also good for whacking small animals that get in your way. Kind of like bike polo. Nice bike you got there. Tange Number 1 is good stuff. RX100 is the same as 105 but with a different finish. Very reliable stuff. Probably a 93 or newer bike. Is your made in Japan or Taiwan?

Look it up in the Nishiki Serial Number thread; you should be able to tell when it was made. If it's 1990s vintage and doesn't fit the numbering scheme in the first post, it's U.S. built and you have to look at this post. Looking at the construction of the fork, I think it us a U.S. built bike. Alternately, if it says "Handcrafted by Kawamura" on the left chainstay, it's a Japanese-built bike.

random question here... Is that considered a "good price" or a "fair market price" or a steal etc?
I'm looking for a road bike for mrs. nomad and I'm disappointed with the prices on CL.
It seems everyone lists high and the bikes are old. I'm ok with an old bike but not a 20 year old work in progress at entry level bike shop prices...

I'm hoping to stumble on something.
Maybe I'll ask everyone at work to donate me their old bikes and see what I get.

It's very hard to believe you didn't know that is a pump! Seriously, I don't believe it.
It is a very nice bike, and my guess is that it rides very very well indeed.

Bikerosity, I use my roadbike to get around town and primarily consider myself to be a mountain biker. I have a small pump that can strap to my frame that I keep in my camelback that looks nothing like the zefal!

Nomad, I agree that its been hard to find a value bike. However, considering the LA has a crazy bike market I decided to go for it. My feeling was that I would just sell my current one and it'd be just a hundred or so out of pocket. If I was in Little Rock where I grew up I wouldn't have paid as much.

From my recent trip to the bike shop to buy a new LHT(first new bike since I was 15 years old), entry level is now $600 or so. CL is not really that inflated, bikes are just back in demand after a 20 year hiatus. That being said, the overpricing on CL is mostly restricted to Big Box store bikes. I see many for sale at or above the current retail prices on comparable models. If you're willing to pay a fair price, CL works, if you're looking for "a steal" or a "flippable" bike, not so good. The new bike market has spiked in the past year, makes sense that the used bikes are up as well.

Tange #1 tubing? That should be a pretty light frame!

I've never seen that decal before. I suspect you're right in guessing late 80s.

Check page 9 of my early 80s Tange catalog to compare with the earlier decal version.

Too bad about the unicrown fork. Great bike otherwise; should be a great ride.
