Fat Hard Slick for 27" steel wheels

Got a '70s era 10 speed and would like to replace the stock style tire with a modern fat hard slick for commuting and other road riding. Any suggestions?

Perhaps something from Panaracer of Continental. If you want to spend the time, the New York Times, of all places, had a blurb on 5 high quality 27 X 1 1/4 tires about 3 to 6 months ago.

Schwalbe Marathon... I sold a ton of these this summer to folks who were bringing their old 27 inch wheeled bikes back to life and folks were most pleased.

I also like Contis a great deal.

I've had good luck with the Forte GT2/k from Performance. Makes a great commuter tire and you can pick them up on sale for well under $15.

The title of this thread should ensure that BF C&V gets some hits when Google is used for what Google is usually used for.

Oh, and I second the Schwalbe recommendation; though the Marathon probably has enough of a tread to keep it out of the "slick" category.

Steel wheels? Convert to alloy 700C and you'll get a better tire selection and an improved ride. You could go with Schwalbe Marathon Racer or Schwalbe Delta Cruiser tires. Both are good for commuting and all around riding.

I'm running Seca Serfas FPS, 110 psi, 27 x1-1/4 on my Trek 400. They have been very durable for about a thousand miles so far. Very close to a slick, I think I paid 19.95 each for them. I'm sure they'd be cheaper on line though.
