Guidons Philippe (ATAX)

Don't know if I have a PX-10 or a UO-10. Unfortunately bike is painted over in black, but the components seem to suggest PX-10 - however I'm not seeing any chromed forks or rear stays when I take the steel wool to it.

ANyway to the reason for my post - the handlebar has a really nice engraving by ATAX Guidons Philippe - FRANCO ITALIA D352. Does anyone know anything about these bars. I especially like the engraving of a big nose frenchy in tuck position grabbing the bars. Nice!

Can't tell you much about ATAX or Guidon Philippe, but they were common on French bikes of the period.
I can tell you it's not a PX-10 - the "Aztec" lugwork, which is what I think I can see in your photos, was common on lower-end Pugs, including the ubiquitous UO8. PX10s had Nervex lugs, either plain, or the prettier "Professional".
There are few French bike enthusiasts that regularly post here, so I'm sure one of the them will be able to tell you more about the bars and stem.

I flipped a 1981 Peugeot UO10 a couple years ago that had the nicely engraved Philippe bars. I don't think the bike in the picture is a PX10. What are the brakes? The levers are Mafac, but the brakes don't look familiar.

UO10

UO8: Steel wheels, steel crank, stem shifters.
UO9: Steel wheels, alloy crank, stem shifters.
UO10: Alloy wheels, alloy crank, DT shifters.

Brakes are MAFAC Racer alloy centerpulls (both F and R). Yeah, thanks MIAMIJIM - my gut was telling me UO-10. I based all my findings from a cyclespeugeot.com website that has some specs. my best guess is it's a 77 or 78 from the decals I was able to uncover. The headbadge puts it in the 75-79 bracket.

Really... must be a later version I'm not familiar with.

Brakes are Weinmann calipers with Mafac levers.....

Both my Gitane bikes have Guidon engraved bars and I believe my PSV10 does too - but I's have to confirm that when I get home. There's your French bike theme.

Edit: One set of Franco Italia D352 bars and two of the Tour De France D357 models on the PSV and Gitane Tour de France bikes. They're all nicely engraved

Actually I'm looking at it right now and the brakes are MAFAC (centerpulls) with MAFAC levers. There's also MAFAC cable guide on the rear seatpost and at front.

Not UO8 as far as I can tell, brakes look interesting, aint seen any like that b4 maybe a few close pics of brakes and lugs up close and a drive side shot of full bike might help in the ID ! as for the bars and stem all I know is a rule of thumb here ---->> ATAX - good, AVA -BAD,,PIVO - good !

you are correct. I have a better monitor at home.....but its still a UO10.

ken_matthews 03-12-09 04:35 PM

sure blame it on the monitor! :>)

I made the wrong assumption that my nice engraved set of GP bars were French sized (25.0mm) and tried to stick them in a French stem. Only served to gouge them horribly. :( Measure first if you change anything.

Above average bar and stem manufacturer, but not in the league of Cinelli.
