New Super Course frame, 1973 or ??

Hi, all, I just got a "new" 52 cm Super Course frame with headset, fork and stem, but no BB or seatpost. It's the metallic coffee brown, and the downtube decal "RALEIGH" is in block letters, with "Super Course in script. I've been looking for a site with serial number info or other guidance to dating, but no joy yet. Anyone know where I should look?

Pictures in a few days!

The '72 Raleigh catalog shows cursive downtube letters, and the '73 shows block "Raleigh." Pic below. By '74, the model was the Super Course MkII, so yours is likely a '73 then.

Yeah, Neal I found those pics! It does show my Carlton decal on the seat tube, and it might show my Worksop decals on the fork crowns.

But isn't the serial number of any use?

Not that I've found (at least those serial #s stamped on the rear left dropout).

Italicized block letters = post-1972. In the States, this lasted from 1973-1982, until the new Raleigh USA management revamped the image in 1983 with a serifed letter design. U.K. models retained the italicized logo for a few years after '82.

Serials for Raleighs produced between the late '50s and 1972 have not been decoded.

Based on the block letters, mine is 1973 or later. I think there was an equipment change in 1976 or so with no more brown, so maybe mine is 1973 thru 1977 or something? Not a Super Course II?

So if 1973 has been decoded, where can I find the secret decoder ring?

Didn't find it on Sheldon's domain, last night.

Edit: forgot about the 1974 Super Course Mk II. It had "Super Course Mk. II" painted on the TT, right? Mine does not ahve the Mk. II, so I guess it has to be 1973?

Yup, as I noted in comment #2.

Ok, so 1973 it is.

I've test fit a Cinelli stem and it slips right, so I'll actually use a Nitto Tech Deluxe - I'll need it to get handlebar height. Harris Cycles has a seatpost database, which says I need a 26.4 mm seatpost. Haven't tried to score one yet, but that's what I need. I think my PX-10E needs the same size. I'll be using a 52/40 or 42 Shimano 600 crank, and 6 speeds since Ihave so many freewheels. Probably tubular 700C wheels to start, possibly changing to Velocity Aeroheads for a strong clincher, with a near-vintage look.

Gotta be a honey-brown Brooks!

You will love the bike. My Super Courts ('74, I think) is my main ride, and has been for the last year or so. It's unbelievably comfortable, the geometry is just right for long, rambling rides, and it looks so good. Definitely go with the brown Brooks. My Super Course is green, so naturally I went with the green B-17.
