Trek Edge 4050 replacements

There is nothing wrong with the components right now on the '89 Trek 400 but I was thinking of getting some new old stock off ebay for later use. This model had was a seven speed index shift.

I read where there is a first and second generation version of the 6-7 4050's, are they interchangeable?

Are there other Suntour front and rear detailers that are better than the 4050's that are better?

Thank you for the information.
