Picked up a mid-80s Motobecane Mirage...
for $40. 25" frame, maroon, seat post bolt mounted between seat stay and main tube. Nervar crank, Weinmann 27" wheels with Maillard hubs. Weinmann single pivot sidepull brakes. It's kind of in rough condition, but where the frame is not scratched, the paint is in very nice condition.
I promise to get pics of it soon, but my one question is: where do I find any serial number information, or do I date it by the components? I did find the catalog for the '79 and '84 models, but the '84 Mirage did not appear to have the seat post binder bolt between the seat stays and the mail tube. The frame looks fillet brazed, but it says it is a special type of internal lugging. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! geek

in-external brazing, they called it. If yours is like one I recently worked on the SN might be *underneath* the plastic cable guide, under the BB.

I have a mid-eighties Mirage, too.
If the wheel hubs are original, you can check them for a date, also.

Thanks for the tips! I'll be working on it soon, and get pics. Not sure on it's value, if it not very collectable I'll convert to fixed gear and flip.

Best bet is to check components for date codes, the SN will just confuse you. Hubs, derailleurs, seat post (probably), and other alloay components will usually have a date code - hub date codes consist of two groups of two digits - one is the year, and the other is the week (00-52). Since most bikes are built just prior to or early during their model year, a December 83 date code ordinarily means a 1984 bike.
