Weinmann NRB-499 sidepulls - year(s) of production?

I just bought a pair of these sidepull calipers, just because they looked so attractive. They have concealed springs. Anyone know when they were in production?

They do look nice...if it weren't for the "Made in Germany" on the back, I'd have guessed they were high end Dia Compe's.

Actually, I saw a pair of the Suntour hidden spring brakes on eBay, and compared them to the calipers I've received now -- they're virtually identical. A quick check on Velobase, and I'm sure that they're the same design exactly as the late Suntour Superbe brakes produced from 1988 - 1994.

I wonder if Weinmann bought brakes from Dia-Compe, or licensed the design from them and (as is engraved on the backside of mine) made them in Germany.

Compared to what these seem to go for on eBay, I think I got quite a good deal. I'm thinking of putting them on a 1983 Motobecane Team Champion -- they're a bit late, date-wise, but they're so elegant.

A Swiss based company, Weinmann had factories in various countries where different products were produced. Weinmann and Dia-Compe had a close working relationship since the 1960s. You've probably noticed all the interchangeable parts on the old center-pulls, etc.

Here is a quote from an old web page which I can't seem to find now, but saved the info...
"Dia Compe first made a major impression on the bicycle industry in the '60's, when they invented extension levers for drop-bar brakes. At that time, Weinmann was the leading brake manufacturer. Dia Compe's extension levers were so popular that Weinmann entered into a licensing agreement with Dia Compe, allowing Dia Compe to copy Weinmann's brakes in return for letting Weinmann copy Dia Compe's extensions."

I have never seen Weinmann brakes like these, but they sure look like SunTour Superbes (Dia-Compes) to me.
