schwinn paramount

Hey all,

The following ad is for a bike that I'm going to be looking at in a few days. I'm wondering if the $800 price tag is appropriate. I'm not that well schooled on Paramounts, but being that it's anniversary model and all I figured I'd ask ya'll what you think.

Waterford built 1987 Schwinn Paramount track bike. 55cm. One of the rare Paramounts built in the Waterford studio. 50th anniversary Superbe Pro model. Chrome track ends, Cinelli bb shell, matching lugged flat-crown fork. Sugino 75 cranks with 46t Sugino track ring. Mavic MA3 rims laced to Superbe Pro high-flange track hubs. Vittoria Rubino tires. Nitto track bars and stem. Campy seatpost. Selle San Marco Regal saddle (missing one rivet).

Not outrageous for a track model with that build. Not a steal either.

It's an '88 model (50th anniversary year) and the decals (silver?) will note that, but it's not a 50th Anniversary Limited Edition as those were all road models (I think) with gold plated forks and gold decals.

It's not one of the gold forked ones. I'd post a pic but the ad was taken down. I guess I'm wondering if I should spend that much on what would essentuially be used for a commuter.

It sounds like it's priced high to me. Then again, it's a track bike.

It depends.

If you've got a substantial stolen bike replacement budget, and/or you'll be keeping the bike with you in your office, and you want to ride a really nice bike on your commute, and you believe that you can ride safely without brakes, then go for it.

If you don't have a theft replacement fund and would have to lock it outside, and understand that bikes are safer with brakes and don't want to drill that fork for a brake, then it might not be a good choice.

To those who said that was priced high you don't know vintage Paramount or vintage track bike prices. That would have grabbed $2000 or so on ebay. The last Superbe Paramount on ebay was roughly a year ago and went for $2600.

I thought '88 was the 50th anniversary? The ad says it was built in '87. Perhaps its late '87 production as an '88 model?
