Okay. Technically, what I'm posting here is outside the scope of this thread. This is not for sale, not on Craigslist, not on Ebay, not anywhere. However, this fits well within numbskullery.

I'd been wondering why I have seen so many seriously overpriced Huffy Aerowinds lately. So in the interest of Science (capital S, ya'll) I googled "Huffy Aerowind" and here is what is at the top of the pops:

https://www.livestrong.com/article/34...uffy-aerowind/

Read it and be stunned:

The Huffy company has been making bicycles since 1887, and through much of the 20th century, Huffy bikes competed in the U.S. market with companies such as Schwinn and Raleigh. The Aerowind was a popular Huffy bicycle model introduced in 1980. Now discontinued, the Huffy Aerowind is popular with vintage bike collectors and nostalgia seekers.

Models and Features
The Aerowind was produced in 10-speed and 12-speed models, and different bicycles were made for men and women. Avocet seats were installed on original Huffy Aerowinds. The original tires on the Aerowind measured 1 3/8 inches by 1 inch, and had steel rims. The gears and cranks on the Aerowind were made by the Japanese company Shimano. Huffy intended the Aerowind to be a fast road bike, a style change from the cruiser and mountain bike models Huffy had been selling immediately prior to 1980.

Because the Aerowind was a popular bike in the 1980s, there are plenty of Aerowinds out there. You might find an Aerowind for sale at a garage sale, or through local classified ads. Of course, it is unlikely that the original features -- such as tires -- would have been preserved over several decades. An old Aerowind that has been unused for several years may cost more than its purchase price to fix up and make roadworthy. Collectors often wish to use original, vintage parts when restoring a bicycle. A fully and accurately restored Aerowind may cost as much as $1,000, according to the Boston Biker website.

Pros and Cons
The Aerowind has the unique look of a 1980s road bike. The tubing is flattened in places to give an aerodynamic, streamlined feel to the frame. Other pros include the relatively low cost and high availability of Aerowinds today; it is not the rarest or most expensive collector's bike. Like most older bicycles, however, the Aerowind frame is heavy, and may slow you down if you wish to use the bike for fast road riding.

Quality
According to online culture magazine "Smile Politely," the quality of Huffy's bikes between the 1930s and 1960s was relatively high. Huffy's offerings at this time were of similar quality to those of the Schwinn bicycle company, although Schwinn bikes were typically more stylish. In 2010, vintage Huffy bikes are not considered as collectible as the older Schwinn models. Between the 1960s and 1980s, the Huffy company imported some very high-quality bikes that were manufactured by Carlton and Raleigh. The Aerowind is one of Huffy's higher-quality vintage bikes from the 1980s, although there is not the price premium on an Aerowind that a vintage Schwinn would command.

I think I may have just peered into the abyss of misinformation and half truths the internet is. I think I need a shower.

This alone makes this ad worthy of conclusion here. This bike appears to be 67cm, but the seller states:

The bike will accommodate most any rider comfortably.
Your average High school basketball player could not ride this bike "comfortably".

I have always liked the looks of cottered cranks. Powder coat doesn't look quite right. The cranks don't look like they're put together properly. I admire the seller's optimism & effort.

This is precisely what I would do if my wife asked me to sell my favorite bike.

"Sorry dear, no one was willing to pay my reasonable asking price. Tough market these days."

It should also be noted that Huffy made sold a several model Aerowinds the ones that are worth close $1000 are the limited edition competition version which had full alloy components Chromoly frames and are no relation to the standard steel ones worth about $100.

Interesting. Would love to see pictures of one of these. Every one I have ever seen has the pressed and stamped drops and the cheapie brake bridge-- and I have see far too many of them.

I sold an Aerowind a couple months ago. I replaced the steel wheels with 27" alloy wheels. I also installed alloy drop bars and nice bronze color brake levers. New cables, white housings, tape, and saddle completed the bike. The result was passable but nothing special.

I agree on all counts. I repaired that bike and gave it a test ride, and it most certainly did not ride like a dream. And no, that bike is not going to fetch even $100, let alone $500.

All I can figure is, maybe the guy must be hoping to catch the one rube who falls for the line "for you, the price today is half off", so at $250, Moe quintuples his money. I don't know. Boggles my mind.

The ad is gone now. I wonder what happened to it? The exact same one I found on EBay sold for a third of that:

I have a hunch that the seller rotated the bars down and hung the thing in the rafters of his garage. Then didn't bother to put them back up when the posted the bike for sale.

Or, they are wacky.

That was my thought too, but I couldn't figure out if the stoker bars would fit on either side of that large captain's saddle.
