@boattail71: Oh, that's terrible! Looks like it may have been a decent bike under all that paint.

folkform 08-19-13 04:21 PM

What kills me is the ad has the gall to show pics of the very nice Nishiki underneath the spray paint explosion.

pcdmiele 08-19-13 07:12 PM

here is one for the LA haters/ lovers. not sure how to add the original ad into the post for posterity.

Unbelievable. This bike has been for sale for at least a year. I wonder if the LBS who tuned it up recommended changing out that stupid Raleigh chopper seat?

Vintage panasonic for sale. Just got a tuneup at the lbs. New cables, chain, and everything, tightend, lubed, greased, etc. This bike would be perfect for someone between 5'4" and 5'10". I am a bit taller than that and as such this bike does not fit me perfectly. Otherwise, I would use it to cruise around town with a passenger in tow. Of course there is no weight limit so you will have to be reasonable about who you choose to ride around with. I think it's a 56 cm frame. The frame is in excellent shape. It shifts and brakes perfect and the tires are pretty good too! Please respond with a phone number and when you are able to check it out. If this ad is up its still available.

If this guy worked in bike shops for over 13 years, then I am never taking my bike to another shop. There is just so much wrong with this bike, I don't even know where to start.

Yes this one does have a lot wrong with it.
http://boston.craigslist.org/sob/bik/4011875074.htm
First thing on a classic vintage bike resotred and rebuilt with random parts are not the same thing. Just real quick I can spot the cabling is awfull. The low end black tripple crank with junk pedals just looks silly on a bike this nice. The repaint is pretty shaby. Mismatched soso wheels that don't really go with the bike. Probably a good rider but just because a bike rides nice and all the parts somewhat fit together, this does nor make it a nice rebuild much less a resoration. When one refers to a classic as resored that should me it is put back into excellent original condition so with reason it isn't siginificantly defirent than when it rolled out of a shop originally.

That position may actually be better than the stem. until you rack your boys on them.

Schwinn actually stoped using top shifters in the late 60's for this very reason after numerous complaints and a couple of law suits. Actually going sitting reaching back this much to shift caused many riders to loose balance come of the seat and you can quess what happens. Top shifters did not earn the nick name nut busters for nothing.

I like the ad's title: "FIRENZE ITALIAN RACER LIKE GT TREK ECT [sic]."

This guy used to give them away.

folkform 08-20-13 09:31 AM

So, ~700 in parts for a ladies schwinn traveler frame + 500 in labor costs?! I've never had someone build up a bike for me, but surely it wouldn't cost that much, right?

Yeah, I think zukahn's link is missing the "l" at the end. Anyway, the workmanship is horrible throughout. The bar wrap is worn, nevermind horribly done. The brake levers are cocked. The cabling is horrible, trim that rear brake cable please. The front derailleur is a mountain derailleur which doesn't shift well with road shifter levers, nevermind that it's mounted about an inch too high. How about the rear skewer needing to be trimmed? Oh yeah, the front skewer should be reversed. Is that a stem/bars/levers from an old French bike? Wouldn't be surprised if it's 22.0mm and not 22.2mm. If there's this much wrong just at first glance, I shudder to think of what other issues it has. I just hope nobody falls for his B.S. sales pitch and overpays for an inferior bike.

Normally we'd just laugh at the audacity of asking $400 for a cigarette promotional freebie. Lung cancer and heart disease not included. But in this case the seller in question doubles the price in 24 hours, and then proceeds to forget to delete the original listing.

The last year of the krate shifters was 73, same year pedal reflectors became mandatory equipment. Good old CPSC!! They were founded in 1972, and they quickly went to work saving us all from our bicycles;).,,,,BD

i didn't even notice the "L" was missing. now that i've seen it, yeah, i wouldn't buy that for $329. for someone that's allegedly worked in shops for 13 years, some of that is really inexcusable.
