The wackiest part is the $350 asking price for a used Walmart $150 bike.

Could this be a misplace decimal point. 32.50 sounds good to me. Now watch someone is going start bad mouthing me. Just like when I made a comment or two about the Knaivel Bike.

There are three or four flippers in this area that keep prices at an almost stupid level so most everything is high. If it isn't, it is snatched up in hours. The only things that are cheap is beach cruisers and Walmart mountain bikes. There is one Mexican Benotto mixte that has been 'reduced' in price for months. Gainsville has a good market but that is across the state.

Schwinn Stingray Fastback, for only slightly more than 4x what it cost brand new 45 years ago:

1972 Chicago-Made SCHWINN Stingray Fastback - 5 Speed - Clean

My parents would be so pissed that they sold mine for $30 when I outgrew it 40 years ago - well, perhaps lime green is worth 15 times what the yellow colored ones were.

Hope springs eternal...

My favorite, especially on eBay are listings for "Super Rare Peugeot U0-8s"

Other things are the exorbitant prices asked for track bikes! In the 70s we used to sell gas pipe Gitane Track Standard bikes for $69.95 new! They were nothing but striped down entry level bikes! Now they go for $300-$600!

When I find people looking for a 27" wheel or such, I recommend that they search all of the charity outlets like the Salvation Army where they can find a whole donor bike for ~$25.

Strip the frame and list it on eBay or CL as a Fixie Special and some fool will give you $150-$200 for it!

Just like PT Barnum said "A bottom feeding freshwater fish native to Northern North America is born every minute"!

Nostalgia. It's not that it was a great bicycle but it brings back great memories for a lot of people that grew up in that era, like me. In the late 60's and very early 70's a Schwinn Stingray was THE cool bike. People that had one or always wanted one when they were a kid now have disposable income and are willing to pay for a nice one.

I always thought the Krates were cooler than the Sting Rays. And I owned a Sting Ray Fastback

The Krates were the top of the Cool list but any "real" (as in Schwinn) Stingray was highly desirable as most of us had to settle for one of the knockoffs from Murray, Hiawatha, JC Higgins, etc. I had to build my own "stingray" from a JC Higgins frame I pulled out of the junk. The Fastbacks weren't quite as popular around here, the back tire was too skinny but those Ram Horn handlebars were cool. The one kid in our small town that had a Krate bike had a Pea Picker, he broke the handlebars somehow and his dad replaced them with a set of the Ram Horns. He already had the "coolest" bike in town, those just put it over the top. Sad part was he hated the bike because it was green, he had wanted an Orange Krate for his birthday but the dealer only had the Pea Picker in stock so that's what he got instead. Yes, he was a bit spoiled.

I understand the nostalgia part. I had a Coppertone Stingray Deluxe in the late 60's early 70's. I just can't see myself wanting to actually ride one again.

Try it, you might be surprised. I get my 30th Anniversary Orange Krate down and ride it once in awhile, I'm 6' 1-1/2" and 230 Lbs. It's quite a sight LOL but it's also a lot of fun and the banana seat with "shocks" is actually fairly comfortable. Since the 1998 reproductions have no collector value one of these days I want to put a 5 speed IGH in the rear wheel and a drum brake in the front. This was taken back in '98 when I brought it home (and I was a few pounds lighter ).
