Come along on my journey of discovery of the Italian frame-building odyssey…

The first time I laid eyes on a SOMEC was in 1998. Not having been graced by the knowledge of SOMEC previously, I was absolutely gob-smacked and literally stopped dead in my tracks by the most unimaginable bike bling; picture my eyes rolling back in delirium. The chrome, the paint, the pantographed Record groupset. SOMEC was on my bucket list since that very moment of enlightenment.

You can find the illustrious and decorated history of SOMEC on the internet. What you will notice is that SOMEC frames were ground-breaking in many technical and aesthetic areas. Check out the images from the archive catalogues and you’ll see some crazy paint designs, beautifully executed airbrushing and everywhere your eye is taken, incredible detail. The construction is no less impressive; from the fastback seat lug to the invisible TIG construction, the quality of build of their frames has constantly made me re-think “Who was really the best?”

The frames were perfectly executed: simple and elegant builds, catering for the professional teams of the ear, for which function is king.
Their livery has often been “really out there”; check out the dot matrix font or the airbrushing and masking artwork, which would have cost more than the special tubes themselves. Each frame was hand made, hand painted, and you will be extremely unlucky to ever see another one similar, where ever you take your bike around the world.

You’d be forgiven for wondering why, after all this praise I’ve showered on the marque and frame, I would ever contemplate selling it. Well, for me, this is a hobby. As a young man I could never afford frames from the golden era of steel. Fortunately, now I can afford them, and I ride them for a while to appreciate them, critique them and rank them in my own order of what works for me, then, with a knowing smile I pass them on.

I’ve been so pleasantly delighted by every aspect of my dalliance with the SOMEC ProMax, from the construction to the handling, to sheer beauty of the paintwork; attributes you will simply not see in most of those other big-name Italian builders. No offence genitori, but this is a class above all else.

So finally, “what’s with the hefty asking price?” you may well ask. Well, here’s the thing: it’s a SOMEC. They were never cheap, nor should they be now. When this frame was made I was an Eddy Merckx dealer, and the equivalent frame -- the highly sought-after MX Leader -- was just under $2K wholesale. Yep, that’s right, wholesale. I’ve also just checked with Lara at SOMEC, and the gorgeous Rex frame in Columbus Spirit will cost around $3.5K landed, including all duties. I’m doubtful the new frames will be as collectible as the ProMax, simply because it’s infinitely more precious to own the original, isn’t it?!!

I always take a second look at the Tenax framed Schwinns that pop up from time to time on CL. $120 for the frameset seemed pricey, but what was bugging me was that I couldn't recall a Prelude that was blue and chrome. Then I used google image search and found this likely culprit:

Aye, and they apparently couldn't even be bothered to center them or make the pattern symmetrical. I'm guessing there's a reason why they don't have a photo of the entire bike (and there's probably a reason why there's a fly on the saddle in one of the photos...they are attracted to dung heaps, after all).

I "might" pay that for the whole bike, with decals intact, if it was very clean? The worst part of the whole thing? It takes a proprietary brake, like I have on my Roland Racing, or like a mid 80's Raleigh I had for a short time. The spring holes are on the outside. Incompatible with 99% of the brakes available.,,,,BD

I find it pitiful to see the ignorant trying to peddle "bonded aluminum" when it's usually far less reliable than good old 4130/other-chromolly-steel frames! If I were the seller I would educate myself before selling anything else.

I'm going through a phase where I am trying out various leather saddles. I have an obligatory Brooks Pro (the one that got me started), a Record (Italian Brooks copy), a Fujita Belt, and a new VO. The VO is the one that gets ridden the most (it's on my commuter), but it's also the least comfortable so far. I hope it softens up a bit in the next couple months.

Well before entering this phase I stumbled on an old Ideale (90 I think) at an estate sale for $5, which I flipped on eBay for about $140. Though I made a nice profit, I now kind of wish I had kept it.

Oh, there's a much nicer one on Seattle CL for $295.

I have looked at this sellers adds for the last few months and considered buying some of them but her/his prices are often too high IMO and on occasion either seemed to be ignorant or pushing crap. For me personally, I would not buy from this seller.
