Stockton is a city that people in Sacramento can feel snobby about not living in.

nothing like being so PC you can't acknowledge patterns.

Would it be surprising if the average value of CL bikes posted from a poor, crime-ridden neighborhood is lower than the average value of CL bikes posted from an affluent, safe neighborhood?

Decent bike, but I found "nag trainer" to be funny. I picture his wife yelling "You never ride that bike in the basement anymore!"

Hopefully I won't be putting my foot in my mouth here....

I would expect the wealthier individuals to be buying the $10,000 bikes new, whereas the poorer individuals will either be buying Walmart specials or picking up those expensive bikes for pennies on the dollar, and perhaps riding them into the ground. That alone might affect the resale prices.

However, on the used market, the wealthier people are often those to discount their merchandise more. They just want to clean out the garage, whereas the poorer individuals often want to squeeze every last penny out of the sale, but may also be the ones where maintenance has lagged behind a bit.

Then, of course, there is the huge group of people in the middle... and they certainly can't be forgotten.

The super-poor might ride a bike out of necessity. And ride it until it falls apart (or has a flat tire, whichever comes first), then get a new one.
The middle class might ride a bike as the socially responsible thing to do. And, may be hiding some of the real nice bikes.
And the upper class... ????

I see what you did there, Zachary. But you failed, because Stockton is actually what Wiki says it is. I wouldn't buy bikes from people in Reading, PA or from Pottsville, or Shenandoah, or Harrisburg, or any other of several small cities here in SEPA for the exact same reasons.

A bit of advice - next time you try to call someone out on perceived failings, make sure you get some actual moral authority backing up your position. Being smug and "caring" about something doesn't qualify as moral authority. It only stands as further evidence of the failure of baby-boomer helicopter parenting.

[h=2] LOOK!!!! Super Hipster Special! Great Fixed Gear Conversion Project - $900 (Atlanta, GA)[/h]

craigslist - Map data OpenStreetMap

This sweet sweet trike is currently a front wheel fixed gear, but hey, who wants to skid on the front wheel? This will make a great conversion project for anyone that wants to move a trike drivetrain to the rear and create a super sweet trike skidder. All you need is a new hub that will take a lock ring and a fixed cog, a chain, a frame extender kit, a welder, an extra wheel or three, and a little motivation. Be the first in Atlanta to pimp-slap the city with a fixed bad-a$$ skidding trike.

Imagine you're cruising through cabbagetown, you see some love-me-like-spun-vinyl-lookin' hipster girl with her short haircut, sleeve tattoos, tight jeans, smokin a cig, just lookin all fine like a basket full of sexiness. You cruise up to her on your new ride, lock up the pedals, skid to a stop right next to her, and glance at her over the rims of your sunglasses. She'll melt and climb in your giant messenger bag, just like a little baby kangaroo climbin in mama's pouch.

You've seen Premium Rush. You know Joseph Gordon Levar Burton knows how to ride. Now you can join the fixie force. Deliver packages, go to the pub for an ale, or just to leave streaks of skidded rubber on Atlanta sidewalks.

Buyer must pick up in Little Five Points. Go to the first bum you see sitting outside The Vortex, give him a bottle of Jack Daniels, and tell him "special delivery". Then go wait at the Starbucks. A guy will show up with the bike.

P.S. I recommend swapping out the saddle for a Brooks.

I dunno, sounds like it might involve skidmarks...

You give yourself too much credit. In real life, nobody gets a trophy for debating unless they win.

Simple perusal of Craigslist is enough to indicate that Stockton isn't a repository for wonderful, decent-condition vintage cycling iron. Since Stockton is one of the poorest, most bankrupt, most-defaulted, least-educated and least-fit cities in the USA, that's to be expected.

Not to dismantle anyone's rock solid arguments or question superior moral authority here, but I would like to point out that the ad in question was posted in Manteca, CA and not the city of Stockton (the county seat).
According to latest census data the median household income for 2009-2013 in Manteca was $61,458 (compared to $46,831 in Stockton), which seems to be a hair higher than that for California as a whole. Conclude from that what you wish about the used bicycle market.

And then, suddenly, this - https://eugene.craigslist.org/bik/4997338864.html

One of a kind single speed - $350 (springfield)

Awesome ss bike size is roughly a 61/63, it fits me perfect, but I'm 6'4", so its could be used comfortably by someone 6'2-6'8" probably. I have a 34 inseam, so shorter legs for my height.

Pictures are worth a thousand words. I bought the frame (a Tsunami TT frame) on Ebay, and it was/is an army green (not really my color) so I made it into a ninja turtles bike. Hand painted a face, and rattle canned some purple stripes. Fork post is uncut, and derailleur hangers are still there if you want to make it geared again.

Soooooo if you want to be noticed and complimented on your bike everywhere you go, this is the one for you.

its got a smattering of good parts and older/not as good parts. Great carbon handlebars, great fsa breaks, and a good TT seat for extra padding. Old creaky pedals, and an old mtb crankset finish it off.

Texting is best for me because I work random hrs. (fivefourone) six ten, 8467

The horror....

I have a Pacific Outback Bike for sale. It needs new tires as it's been sitting a while but it's in great shape. I just need to get rid of it so my loss is your gain.

I'm not sure I'd leave that one locked up in some parts of town. Someone might leave a deposit for you.

BTW: The image is stolen off of the web. Nice story though.
