I admit I'm also curious to learn about that Gitane.

Here is his response:

I have to ask: what is going on with that frame? It is obvious the seat tube is joining at the down tube and not the bottom bracket shell. That would not be stock

I assure you, it is stock, though I realize that the down tube/seat tube joint is uncommon, even with the nature of what Gitane was doing back then.

Also, from the pics provided it's clear that the dropouts are not Campagnolo but Simplex "honeycomb" dropouts. It's difficult to tell more detail, but something else seems to be going on back there at the dropouts, too.

I thought so too, but several LBS insisted they are campys. You may be correct. I will check back in with my vintage expert and consult another as well.

The frame has surely been modified by someone. I think the "rust" you were thinking of Dremeling off is actually the remains of the brazing material/lug edges on the BB shell from when the seat tube was removed/relocated.

The frame has not been modified, see notes above

Jeff

Are you interested in buying the bike?

Thanks,
Brandon

I responded by telling him I've no idea about whether I would buy the bike until I could satisfy my curiosity and see it in person. Hopefully I can see it today or tomorrow and get pics. Personally, I think the guy just doesn't have a clue, and if he checked with a bike shop or two and they said the dropouts are Campy, well, that just goes to show the newbies working on today's bikes just don't know the details of vintage bikes.

Interesting bike.
Apparently quite a classic of big tube full suspension MTBs, but unfortunately succumbing to two decades of age. Nice build. Mechanical brakes?

Hard to say what it would be worth... perhaps $500 or $600 with a pristine paint job, tops. Or a bit less.

So, does the gold work add $600 or $700 to it? Gold leaf isn't that expensive, but I could imagine applying it would be an expensive process if done commercially.

^ That's too nice to take off-road now! Pretty cool concept, though.

I don't think I'm going to get to see that Gitane. Seller has not answered me back - perhaps he has gleaned that I have at least some vintage bike knowledge and if I see it in person will know immediately he's full off doo-doo. Oh, well. But, damn, I was looking forward to seeing how that thing had been jury-rigged.

not terribly wacky except the one line:

"I don't really know that much about this bike except that it was made in Italy." - so the only thing he knows about this bike, he is wrong about...

It turns out that it is a Gitane Traveler. Presumably made to be packed into a relatively small box. I'm not sure if there was a specific bike box or size they had in mind.

I went to the ad and marked it "best of" because that was just too funny. Made me chuckle.

They were purchased from the bicycle shop in Lititz (receipt) June 13, 2017. I wanted new tires and tubes for a bike ride my wife and I wanted to do. We did the ride. More about that later.

The woman's bike is a Ross Eurosport with 27" tires. The wheels will clean up and shin, but not as well as the man's bike. These wheels still have some corrosion on them. Also, the rear reflector is missing. The bracket is there (see photo #3), but the reflector is missing. See photos.

Both bikes were on the abandoned section of the PA Turnpike June 20th 2017 where these photos were taken. We had no issues with either bike. The issues were with my body and my wife's body. I am just to fat (100 lbs over weight) for a skinny tire bike. I am not allowed to say why my wife is not interested in riding. (I have been threatened with bodily harm if I say she is 50 lbs, plus, over weight).

Both bikes made the ride but our bodies are letting us know they are not happy with what we just did.

$85.00 for both bikes, not each. Mike. Text is best. Call leave number if no one answers (please talk slow. I am old). Return email will work also.

Please do not contact me asking if they are still available. If you are reading this, they are still available.
Please do not contact me asking if they come in any other color (Say it with Krylon).
Please do not contact me asking if I will mail them to you.

Happy pedaling.

You guys should read the ad as the owner talks about the bike and links to an old Bicycling article about it. The bike was designed to be shipped, and originally came with a travel bag. The geometry made it more compact for packing.

Read the description on the DC listing. The text wreaks of broken English from eastern Europe.

He updated it. Our questions were all posed before he changed it. In fact, CliffordK is the one who ID'd the bike and I'm the guy who let the seller know what he had.

Dunno if this counts as wacky because I actually like it: A Peeps color themed Univega Gran Rally with mauve or rose frame and yellow trim. Marshmallowy Easter goodness.

Only reason I haven't jumped on it is because I just bought my Centurion Ironman from the same seller last month (and my Univega Via Carisma last year). The Gran Rally frame geometry looks more comfortable than the Ironman.

Chromo triple butted frame with those little cutouts. Awful tempting.

I had a Bianchi in, essentially, that color for decades (it was an 85). Looks better with celeste trim (bar tape, cables, ...).

The yellow looks, er, interesting, but the tires are a bit much.

Gold-plating all of the allen bolts, etc. seems a bit short-sighted, no? You can't use tools on the bike without taking the finish off. I guess finger-tight will have to be good enough.

I posted the DC one here a couple of weeks back. It has been showing up in the Tampa area off and on. Usually there are three versions of it with various text. The wacky wording would be enough to say scam.

Yup, yellow wouldn't be my first choice but seeing it in the photo, it kinda tickles my warped sense of humor.

The tires look like Vittoria Zaffiros, inexpensive but solid performers. A pair in black was included with the Centurion I bought from him in June. They're available in several colors.

If I had room for another bike, that Gran Rally as-is would be fun for local casual group rides. A couple of friends often ride their brightest or gaudiest bikes for those get-togethers.

It's leaf, not plate... you'd just get out your burnishing stick and do it again

Grey Area...

Clearing out my ex's things

(Contrary to convention, not posting copy of ad. It was listed in CL "free stuff" which I peruse as a bike or two has manifested there.
Be forewarned, I don't think any of the items would be useful for general biking, though maybe for hardcore racy activity?)

https://wilmington.craigslist.org/zi...223932970.html

(I thought, "maybe he or she is ditching their partner's cherished Scapin or Hetchins"? Alas, not so much, though some of it may be "riding gear"?)

I'd have replaced all the small bits with gold anodized titanium. Although, perhaps that would clash a little bit with real gold.

Apply the gold leaf over the top of gold anodized titanium? That way if some of the gold rubs off, there is still the titanium.

Meh, I've shipped stuff I was selling on CL before, in both cases with lots of communication, and paypal up front.

I'm tempted to ask this guy if he'd be willing to ship to san diego for prepaid paypal including an extra $100 for shipping.
