That's not really fair, there are plenty of honest ESL americans who use CL to buy and sell. I bought a laptop from a guy with terrible english, turned out he was a vietnamese immigrant. Pretty good side-hustle; his wife had access to used laptops being thrown away at her work, he would take them, fix them up when possible, and sell them on CL.

How many Katrina babies?

Well, apparently it is a thing. Baby names take a significant plunge in popularity after storms.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-s...-idUSKCN1BC5E6

https://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/10/o...aby-names.html

But, on the other hand, similar names actually get a boost.

I suspect this ad will be removed by CL very very soon but interesting way to describe a bike. If I post an unaltered copy I would be subject to BF discipline.

I'm trying to sell my classic car on CL right now and there is nothing like a car to get the scammers out. So far I've had someone asking for info about the VIN and then sent a link for some VIN checker thing. Why would I need to check my own VIN? So I replied the VIN was in the ad they could check it all they want and I won't be clicking any strange links. Then I got the someone asking some odd questions like does it have a extra key and spare tire. Next text say they are going to send around a driver with a check to pick up the car. Uh huh. Also, got the consignment call even though the ad says do not contact for unsolicited services.

That looks like it could make a nice sport touring bike.

If only the asking price was about $300 to $400 tops.

I can never understand why a person won't invest say $30 in a good saddle (less if one prowls around for a good used saddle), before trying to sell their bike for top dollar.

Some suds?

I've sold hundreds of vintage parts and dozens of bikes on craigs, and I've never seen even one scam like this.

Good. I’m glad I was wrong. Maybe they just target certain areas... who knows. But I’d say a good 30% or more of my ads get one of these bogus responses. And when I ran a google search on it, it appeared fairly common. Still, glad you haven’t had to put up with it.

Yep. I use email through craigs only ... until I develop trust. Then I ask for their phone so I can send a text to make it easier to meet.

Never had any problems except for the rare flake that changes his mind.

Me as well. I tend to get fewer flakes on Nextdoor, but sell things a bit cheaper there. I tend to post on both places but cheaper on Nextdoor. I was happy to get $25 less on the Bob jogging stroller but to miss out on all the flakes of Craigslist recently.

This is my M.O. as well. The effort of emailing, and emailing intelligently, culls the herd of flakes and irritants significantly. I will still get very slow-to-respond people on occasion, but their overly curt email gives them away, and I will often delete correspondence after a day when they haven't gotten back to me. Stupid "offers" get sent to the trash immediately. Serious people will write a proper (or proper enough) email and be prompt with correspondence. Items, with good pictures, a good description, and an appropriate price, sell themselves.

Sure....it's aluminum/carbon and full sus!

TREK Aluminum/Carbon frame - $100 (Richmond)

Heck, my 7000 from the same era doesn't even have carbon or full sus!

I just LOVE IT when people ALWAYS have to mention the original price from decades ago. SMH

WW bonus points for listing the 27" frame size and the u-brake, and for posting two identical photos of only half the bike from the wrong side.

I thought I found a cheap Cannondale. Then I looked closer and realized it was a cheap Walmart GMC Denali with Cannondale stickers on it.
