Handlebar angles
I was looking for a modern road bike (found one!) and I kept seeing ads with handlebars at crazy angles. I would need to be an octopus to put my fingers on the levers. What gives? (Quite possible I’m dumb as a stump so I have that going for me…)

I always interpret that as an effort to reduce the reach. There are plenty of reasons to reduce reach, but only a couple ways to manage it. Extreme bar angles aren't one of those ways.

I've seen several elderly dudes with their old bikes set up that way in my neighborhood recently. I always interpret it as someone wanting to get some exercise on the bike they already have, but no longer have the flexibility to ride it as designed. Free/cheap mod to let them get out and get active. Nothing wrong with that.

Here's a flipper selling a bike he can't flip. His stuff has been posted here before and his ads fill the local CL. Nothing wrong with that and not a bad deal on this one, but look at the bike in the pix and read the last words in the ad: u brakes. Bear in mind that this person purports to know bikes and care for them and is the kind of person who "will not sell a bike with bad tires" but can't identify the type of brakes on a bike he's selling. Not U brakes, not V brakes, but cantilevers.
