I think™ that the extra chainring riding along is something people do for giggles... it's not going anywhere and doesn't really cost anything, so why not? Fashion statement, if you will.

As opposed to THIS ad from a town near me.... hmm... tempting:

Local Flipper - does no clean-up or maintenance - regularly misrepresents bikes (even when he has a nice bike there is no need to lie about)
Gave him enough rope to hang himself - he was happy to oblige
The part I really don't like is all his ads say "Portion of our profits goes to get bikes to under-privileged kids Thanks and god bless" - based on his constant "mis-representation" of the bikes he sells I have serious questions about his Charity work.

From 1984 Trek catalog - Not racing but, "Sport" models

It's a mid-level "sport-touring" bike; not a "team" racing bike by any means. Trek's racing team bikes were custom frames, built to spec for individual riders.

It has a braze-on to hold an idler pulley, and it's still there but it's on the Right side of the bike, and this bike has been "upgraded" to crossover drive. So this is a jury-rigged tensioner. Not new, been done many times, but never for long. People who ride with this "ghost ring" usually get to see the ring rolling down the road sooner or later. The chain gets longer in use (from wear not "stretch" of course) and eventually the ghost ring is not held in place anymore.

It's a bad idea and very unsafe IMHO. Having the timing chain derail can cause a crash. It tends to happen when you're sprinting or at least pedaling hard, especially out of the saddle. That's when having the pedal unexpectedly "fall out from underneath you" can easily cause you to swerve, maybe into traffic. I have seen it happen — they went across two lanes and almost off the road on the opposite side from where they started, luckily no cars were coming. The captain was a multiple national champion bike racer, including tandem racing, so not attributable to a rookie rider. I think most people would have gone down. Keep those timing chains tight!

Also, when an ignorant doofus puts a crossover drive on a tandem, they tend to use single-bike cranks, resulting in 3 of the 4 cranks being threaded the wrong way, so the pedals will unthread themselves in use. I'm not calling this guy an ignorant doofus, because I don't know. But we don't know for sure that he's NOT, and it's safest to assume the worst.

According to the Facebook Marketplace ad it retails for over $1500 new. It isn't just gold colored paint but must be solid gold.

Why not just return the items and save yourself the sales hassles????

Brand New Park Tool Bike Tools

$1
Listed a day ago in Ogden, UT
  • Condition
    New
Just got these tools for my husband but he decided to get a bigger set that has these tools plus more. They are brand new, never been used. We want to sell these for close to the price we bought them, otherwise I’ll return them through the company. It doesn’t have to be the exact cents but close, so $81.95 we’d sell for $80. Prices are on the sheet in picture. Firm on the prices.

Looks like it is a 9speed XT drivetrain. $600 is a decent price. They would probably send a drive side if you asked...if it doesn't sell before that.
