Interesting! See, I didn't even know that because I'm below 'Beginner' level. Fortunately I've got BF to ask questions how to get started if I ever get that itch

I was thinking it would be fun to do a sort of Ship of Theseus build with this. Replace all the tubes, but keep the lugs, dropouts, bridges, and braze-on bits. Would it still be a Merckx? It would certainly look like one, right down to the serial number.

No it's not "like new".

1) Like new bikes often come with "shifters"! Like new bikes include "shifter cables".
2) It's a repaint.
3) You can see chips and no stickers - bad repaint with no clear coat to protect paint?
4) Is that electrical tape for bar tape??
5) $600 would be an insult, $6,000 is an obscenity.

I saw this ad earlier this morning when I was searching FB, at $6,000 and thought "what am I missing here" opened the ad and turned out what was missing was any reason for the price - and as you mentioned shifter and cables. Perhaps the derailleur is a new Mi2 "mind integrated intelligence" you can shift with your mind, and that is the reason for the price?

I succeeded

in making some people laugh.

That frame was in the metal scrap bin.

Understandably so.

I made a joke with a fellow co-op worker that somebody would buy this, even if it’s only to make wind chimes

You would not believe what is actually going down. I’m gonna write about it shortly.

$10

Good luck for rebuilding the frame since 753 tubes are very hard to come by and very expensive also you need Reynolds certification when brazing them. 753 isn't proposedat the Reynolds catalog anymore

I like the closing line: "God Bless" - uh-huh, they're being deceptive (or outright lying) about the $3,000 price-when-new (or perhaps God himself whispered that value into their ear?), and invoking the Lord's name to cover their six. Kinda pathetic, but not all that uncommon; it seems there are plenty of folk who use religion to cover their dirty tracks...

Not a condemnation of true believers - just those charlatans that use their 'religiousness' to facilitate their nefarious deeds.

Looks pretty well thought out!

I'd pay $10 to rent it for an hour, try it out, but I wouldn't want to own it

Rude customers

Hi, some potential buyers are quite sensitive and like to find fault and project their poor behaviour on others even though my ad stated “no lowballers.”

I have never understood the attraction of statements like "no lowballers" or "no scammers."
How would that change anyone's behavior?

If you're firm, say "firm." As a buyer, I rarely engage at that point, but I appreciate the information.

If you're bound and determined to sell, say "best offer."

I usually say "Asking $xxx" to indicate : that's a price I like, and now it's your turn."

And I figure if I get an offer, that adds an option I did not previously have, so I say "Thank you" and mean it.

Whether it's yes thank you, or no thank you, or thank you, how about [$counteroffer], I don't see any reason to get annoyed or insulted or emotional in any other way.

cheers -mathias

The condition seems to be excellent. It looks like the only items that are not original to the bike are the seat and tires. And the seat may be original with cracks or something going on. Judging from the rivets it looks like it might be leather.

If I didn't already have a garage full of bikes I'd be thinking about it.

Don't know anything about the bike? Just make it up!

Schwinn Moab 2 - classic mountain bike - $150 (North Bend, WA)

https://seattle.craigslist.org/est/b...591527752.html

When Schwinn first introduced a mountain bike for the Moab UT competition, it instantly became a hit in the market as the most capable at the time. A few years after that initial intro, Schwinn improved their Moab bike with front shocks, more gears, tapered handlebars, and this is that bike, 1997 Moab 2. It still has an amazing ride that surprises downhillers, is extremely well balanced, and its tough chrome-moly frame soaks up the beating with no complaints. I have primarily used it as a gravel trail bike over the past ten years as I'm too old now to be air-born on a black diamond downhill bike trail so gave it up, but now you have a chance to add this classic to your collection and riding pleasure.

21 speeds, Shimano gearing, upgrades includes a more comfortable Giant seat, speedometer, rear-view mirror, handlebar hand/arm rests, drinking bottle holder, and luggage rack. Has always been stored inside out of the weather, kept clean and lubed, no rust, and regularly tuned in our local bike shop. Front tire is brand new, rear tire has been replaced in the past and still has lots of wear left. This bike is L size (21in seat tube, 23in effective top tube), recommended for people 5ft6in to 6ft1in (I am 5ft 6.5in).

The latest version of this bike sells for $400, but I'm pricing this to sell OBO.

You have some valid points and i may incorporate some of them.
I don’t like low-ball suggests so maybe I should double my price but like you said, state firm.
I know there’s a lot of bike collectors who love a great deal who doesn't?
However, I thought I was polite and was clear and upfront. I don’t want to waste my time of low-ballers. Scammers, well I’ve only ran into one serious buyer who was that.
Anyways, thanks for the input and stay safe on the roads.

I see nothing wrong with the ad wording and you were more than polite. In todays vernacular it is quite normal. When I post something though I overprice it and always add OBO. This was people feel they got a deal.

Regarding the "how to word your ad" discussion:

I did not mean to indicate that @guelphite wrote a bad ad.. I was pointing out that yahoos like the guy with the persistent weirdo offers are not going to be deterred by requests to be reasonable, however phrased.

There are many ways to do this, and the worst that can happen is you waste some time.

I'm familiar with this subject from a car forum where I was active for many years.. that was before cars got overteched and boring, so it's been a while. There was a guy who had decades in the business ('Mr. Shiftright', contributor to Car & Driver etc. and author of the 'Nigel Shiftright' comics, if anyone remembers these. Great guy.) Now of courswe with cars, the stakes are 1-2 orders of magnitude higher, especially w.r.t. follow-up costs.

One of his standard lines when someone complained about sky-high asking prices was "That's just the seller exercising his first-amendment rights."
And I fondly remember one particular classic car for sale -- we're almost back on topic! -- a baby-blue early-80s Mercedes SEL that looked fantastic but had some miles, and the boys were ooh-ing and aah-ing about the car but thought the $15k asking price was too high -- until shifty cut through the clutter by saying. "That's just the FIRST fifteen thousand you're going to spend on that car!"

cheers -mathias

Advertised as having a "cosmetic blemish" for $250. To me looks like an attempt to repair crack, which didn't last.
