Free hunk of metal - previously a lawnmower (Bon Air)

condition: salvage
make / manufacturer: John Deere
model name / number: D110 I had my John Deere D110 riding lawnmower go up in flames the other day. If you would like the metal remains of it you just need to come and pick it up. It accessable by vehicle.

Let me know if you are interested.

^^^^ Or filling the tank while it's running (spark). Whole gas stations blow up that way, yet you still see people with spark-ignition engines filling the tank while the engine is running.

Note, BTW, the distance between the camera and subject....

Not the far more common 600 AX version.

If you haven’t seen this scam then you haven’t sold much on Craigslist.

Its always an out out of town area code. They almost always use the ads full title in their first text. And their English is usually pretty broken.

There are lots of mention of this scam online. For example...

^^^^ Somebody should (or maybe somebody already has) come up with an app that allows you to send them a code that makes it appear to verify that "you are real", but links to completely bogus information, all the while fishing for the source of where they're attempting to mine it. I.e. "scam-back".

Simplest protection against this - DON'T DO CL with a smart phone. CL Email is anonymized; another advantage to "C&V" technology.

Or just send them a different verification code. If they say it's wrong, ask them to send you another. Rinse. Repeat.

That be giving them more time than I care to. And, I’d much prefer to scare the sh*t out them if I can. They never respond after reading “FBI!”

Yeah, I don't own a smart phone. The only cell phone I own is a pay as you go deallie that I keep in the car for emergencies (sometimes take it with me on very long rides) or when I have a rare instance that I need to text someone (my kids' friends' parents only want to communicate that way, but it's hard with an old flip phone). I'm definitely a luddite when it comes to phones and I only do CL via e-mail. After a couple of messages, I to to landline.

Why after 20 years (30?) of internet scams have the scammers not figured out that their language is the tip-off?

Well, some of us haven't seen that. Although I might get suspicious when a person will only talk to me with my doing some verification something.

I've actually had several Craigslist purchases were 100% of the communication was via texting. In fact, about the only thing I use Texting for is Craigslist.

When I was using Yahoo chat, I'd get some random foreign "women" popping up. I'm not sure how they found me, but the first thing they would always do was start with a beep.

That was almost 100% indicative of a fraudulent person from outside of the USA.

Anyway, so I'd have a little fun. They would claim to be Americans, and list a state. So, I'd try to come up with some obfuscated questions that Americans from the place they listed would know the answer to.

So, for example, the one from Ohio, I asked, "What Ohio city was named after a famous explorer?"

For the Florida resident, I asked "Who is Andrew?" While it wasn't exactly a "Who" question, anybody from Florida would have the answer.

Yep. That's actually "getting them". I sometimes pretend to be a scammer too and tell them that Google is going to call them to verify their account.

I wonder if there has been an unofficial moratorium on new babies being named Andrew in Florida in the last 30 or so years.
