Are these RetroFrictions?

Just wondering if the below shifters are re-branded RetroFrictions? They sure look like it to me...

Yes and sweet ones that I haven't seen before!

They may be dangerous, you should send them to me.

kpug505 04-13-09 08:59 PM

I knew it!

Thank you ebay saved searches!

I've not seen that particular model before, but Simplex did make shifters for Gipiemme, and the lever shape does match that of the Simplex retrofriction lever.

are those the plastic ones?

Grand Bois 04-14-09 05:13 AM

Velo Orange used to sell those.

unworthy1 04-14-09 10:16 AM

so: ARE they plastic, or matte black alloy?

I won't know 'til they show up. Hopefully they are metal. I've never heard of plastic RetroFrictions...

Grand Bois 04-14-09 12:17 PM

They're plastic. They call it resin, but that's the same thing as far as I'm concerned.

kpug505 04-14-09 12:24 PM

Hmm...Well they were cheap enough. Hopefully they don't suck.

well didnt you have a weight weenie build going on? I seem to remember something about you expected it to ride like a wet noodle...
anyway, maybe these would work on that bike :)

Well...I've got 2 sets of the Modolo resin shifters which are probably lighter. It's my understanding that the Simplex shifters on a clamp won't mount on standard DT shifter bosses either...

Your post reminds me...I need to do an update on my weight weenie! I almost have all the parts now!:thumb:

frpax 04-14-09 08:25 PM

I used to have some Modolo resin shifters. They sucked. I could never tighten them enough to hold a gear... kept on downshifting. They went into the trash.

int19 04-14-09 09:09 PM

I have a banded pair that look nearly identical - except they have the simplex logos instead. I couldn't get them on the DT shifter mounts on several bikes, but now I have them on a nice Vent Noir.

luker 04-14-09 09:15 PM

I've had to remove the paint from a few bosses, but I have mounted the metal version of these on a couple of bikes...

Pics of your A-D? Pretty please!

Retrofrictions don't do that. They have an internal clutch that keeps them from slipping. That's why we like them.

Grand Bois 04-15-09 08:33 AM

I never found anything that the early banded Simplex Retrofrictions would fit besides their own band. I wanted to put one on the single boss on my Peugeot, but there was just no way.

luker 04-15-09 08:50 PM

the early ones have a sunburst or a star or something on the top of the lever...the newer ones have a cutout loop. I'm addressing the newer ones. I still have the band I took 'em from somewhere and it was a conventional boss size. Never had a pair of the older ones.

Bianchigirll 04-22-09 09:00 PM

I never saw those either. when I sold bikes we called that 'plastic' stuff "high impact nylon resin" *giggle* they are quite cool shifters.
