bike i found - SR GRAN COURSE
 

so i found this bike at the goodwill I'm thinking about buying it, they are selling it for 90 bucks it seemed in good condition and i seem to have found a thread on it here.

it was a SR Grand Course with Shimano parts.
and after reading that it gave me some more info about the bike. but I'm wondering if 90 is to much for it.

If it fits you, and you like it, buy it. Shimano 600 is good stuff, bike looks like it just needs a good cleaning.

yeah i was thinking about it, and all it really needed was a cleaning, im going to wait till this weekend 50% off...

now all i got to do is convince my wife...

It has at the Shimano 600EX shifting stystem and it looks like it has the brakes and hubs too, though not the cranks. For most, the 600EX parts alone would justify the majority of the asking price.

that settles it i think im getting it... i loved the fact it was light too...

I like it. If it's mechanically and structurally sound, the price is right, ATMO.

Price is high for a thrift store, but, the bike is certainly worth that amount. Go for it. Most of the thrift store stuff around here is Huffy/Roadmaster/XMart junk.

I got one of those at my local dump and parted it out...Had I known that people love the older 600 so much I would have left it be and sold it cheaply to a fellow vintage lover. If the bike doesn't fit you well still buy it and flip it.

Depending on the cost of the bike, sell low to the right buyer. The one that will appreciate it most, or one who needs it for transportation.

so i told my wife about it she said you have to many bikes already.

instead we are going to use the money to buy my daughter her first bike this weekend, so im letting it pass for now...

Maybe you could clean it up and flip it for enough profit to buy your daughter's bike.

I think the 600 arabesque are some of the prettier components ever made...

Now, she's got to appreciate a good business decision... For what it's worth, a friend of mine bought the exact same bike in a different color scheme for $100 on my advice- it was much cleaner though. He rides it every day, I think he got a great deal.

hmm i see your point but at the same time i already just got rid of a schwinn continental i bought for 5 bucks for 20. i have a a 3 speed, a beach cruiser and another old cruiser I'm supposed to be working on. all sitting on my apartment patio. so this would be another one sitting on my patio.

but it is a cool bike.. i really like the lugs.... :p

and the thing is saturday is 50% off so i could get it for at least 50 bucks...

If you can get it for $45 to $50 .... go for it. Don't look too anxious, just sincerely interested in it. $90 seems a little high. You know that $90 is the starting point...then add parts & your labor. It also needs to be cleaned up. Otherwise, real nice. :thumb: The thriftl store near me would probably charge $500 for the same bike ;) Of course they have good deals on sports jacket with cigarette burn holes in them :(

so i went ahead and bought the bike for 44 bucks. though the goodwill accidently charged it original and had to cancel it. so i got a pending transaction grrrr...

but i got it and as i was walking out some guy had the same idea as me sell it for a higher price.

but as you all said it had the shimano 600 parts the the cranks are silstar the seat tube, stem, and pedals are "SR" brand.

it also has a kashimax seat too.

the only thing is the stickers are starting to peal. and just needs a good cleaning.

Many of the components are the same as on my wife's early Norco, except she has the arabesque crank and not the silstar....

I am curious about your seat post - looks like a SR Laprade but without the "microadjust" feature....I hadn't seen one like that before - does it look like it was that way originally or was it modified?

ha ha ha i actually dont know what im going to do with it at this point, right now im just cleaning it up.

today i went to the bike store cause i couldn't remove the chain, it didn't have a master link. anyways i went in and the bike guys were ohh my god thats a cool bike. i told them how i came across it, then one of the guys was all ill buy it for 5 bucks.

needless to say i didn't laugh.

so today i took it all apart, started trying to clean it, and gave it a nice wash.

now im trying to polish all the components. to make it sparkle.

The Hi-Ten tubing was a bit of a surprise. I guess it was probably built to meet a price point? Anyways, nice catch I really like the Arabesque components.

so a question is the Hi-Ten tubing not good?
from what i read it isn't the best. but it feels pretty light still, my wife was able to throw it on her shoulder.

il post pictures tomorrow of the work i did today. this has been maybe the second bike i have taken apart so i might have questions for you all.

Yeah, high tensile tubing is generally the bottom of the barrel. On the other hand the shimano 600 components are second from the top. I still think you got a good deal, I just thought that the tubing was weird. There was a Ross (can't remember which one) that had Shimano 600 on a high-ten frame too. I am just assuming that the manufacturer was trying to meet a price point.

I have a Nishiki International with a high ten frame, T-mar informed me that it had everything to do with keeping the bike at 200.00.
