I bought the World for $7
2 Attachment(s)
Location: A parking lot flea market, 7:30 AM last Sunday morning.
Me: Hmmm, what's that? Seller: Oh, it's my wife's old Schwinn. Bought it for her but she never rode it. Been sitting in the basement for 15 years untouched. Please, I really don't want to drag it back home! Me: How much? Seller: $10 ??? Me: Would you take $7 ??? Seller: (without a second of hesitation) SURE!! Black Ladies Schwinn World Sport, around 49cm, 12 speed, Taiwanese Cr-Mo frame, but definitely on the lower end of the line for 1984 given the equipment composition. It still has the white sticker on the chain stay that says: "SCHWINN APPROVED GIANT". The kick stand is a little too long, making it tip over prone. I like the funky front wheel retainers! http://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1...984Ltwt15.html Given that it has a few minor scratches and needed a good cleaning, I cannot call it excellent, but certainly it qualifies as extremely good conditions. It probably received more damage getting to the market that morning than in the 15 years prior! My daughter wasn't impressed (she likes her Motobecane mixte better), so this one will probably end up on Craigslist before too long. |
Nice deal, the Sun tour parts and alloy wheels are well worth the money! That's dinner at taco bell cheap!

Man... I wish I could find a steal like that for that kinda bike! I'm wanting to get a bike for a girlfriend, and that would be a great find! Can't beat $7!
Cool deal ;) |
You don't live near Fort Worth, do you, Demens?
|
Now that's just wrong, to lowball someone for $3!
Great CL fodder though. If you sold it for $10 you'd make a profit. |

/QUOTE] In many cultures, it's considered an insult not to bargain! Seriously, if he said "$10, and not a penny less", I'd have paid the $10. But I played it casual, and he practically begged me not to walk away without it. What would any red blooded American do? You just gotta offer less! |

No, I happened to be in Poughkeepsie that morning when I stumbled upon the Schwinn.
I've lived in Beekman, one village over from Stormville (about 3 miles) since 1981. I love the Flea Market, but in my experience the 'main events' have never been a great spot for bargain bicycle finds. These are basically professional circuit antique and 'new stuff' dealers, and they know what they have..... Still, we have done well with 'turn of the century' oak furniture, depression glass, and other collectibles. We used to laugh that our 1889 farmhouse was decorated in "Early Stormville". A few years ago the management added two more shows specifically aimed at attracting the local sellers, aptly named "The Ultimate Yard Sale". Participation doesn't require a NYS Tax ID, cost per spot is lower, etc. This is where you will find great bikes and all sorts of other stuff. http://www.stormvilleairportfleamark...therevents.htm |
Here's a pic of my 12 year old daughter's '85. It is a nice quality lugged frame and makes a great townie!
