Grandis model/year?
 

Hi all. I just bought what I believe to be an 80s Grandis for my gf from a guy in Italy (through ebay of course), with a mix of some odd components (Campy, Rino, Weinman). I can't really find much info online about Grandis, at least in terms of deciphering model/year. Does anyone know if there are catalogs or a site that I can go to to figure it out? I own two Grandis (1983 and 1992) so I follow them a bit. I'm not aware of a site with dated Grandis images or with catalogs. There's Grandis images out there of course, but not dated. I do know from my following of Grandis bikes on eBay etc what's earlier and later. Yours is different that others I've seen with respect to the top of the seat stays, the head tube decal, and Grandis like that on the fork crown. Your best bet is to date yours by the components, like what years were that rear derailleur produced, that saddle, shifters, etc. It's definitely mid-1980s or later, I would say.

I agree with Peter. Mid-to-late 80's (circa '87?), and I'm guessing it's some type of "B" model.

Picchio has it right on the "B" model I believe. My 1983 and 1992 Grandis both have engraved Grandis logo on the head tube, and a decal on the head tube of this bike leads me to think it's a B model. Also some of those components - Weinmann brakes, Rino cranks, Rino seatpost, shifters - would be on a less expensive model. While I don't see a Columbus tubing decal, I think Grandis would use some level of Columbus tubing, perhaps a less expensive tubeset. B model or not, the purchase price is great for what will be a good riding bike I'm sure.

Thanks for all the feedback. From my own bit of research on ebay and blogs, etc., I came to a similar conclusion about the B level status of the bike, particularly viz the components. I was also wondering, like Peter, why there is no Columbus sticker on the seat tube, but judging by the high regard in which Grandis is held, I have little doubt that it is some level of Columbus. In any case, if y'all think of any other source of info on this truly wonderful company, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks! I'll be sure to post any further info myself when I get the bike and take a much closer look at it.

I did a little more research on the components and have come up with this:

rear derailleur: either Campy 980 or 990 (I'm thinking the latter bc the "Campagnolo" script is all alloy, whereas the 980 is traced in black).
front der: Cambio Rino, no particular model found
crank set: Cambio Rino "Corsa"
brakes: Weinmann Type 500 quick release
brake levers: Weinmann Vanqueur 999

I got all this from velobase.com and it leads me to believe that the Grandis is an entry level model built no earlier than 1980 and probably no later than 1985 or 86. I'd say closer to the latter. Defintitely not top components, but everything I've read about these parts seems to agree that they are by no means bad, just cheaper.

Any other info or insights, please let me know.
