A few weeks ago a new forum member posted a link to his eBay auction and asked our opinions of his Peugeot bike auction. (I've been looking for the thread but haven't been able to find it.) I posted that I thought that his starting bid of $200 was too high.

He got defensive and said his bike was worth at least that much, he'd seen other similar bikes sell for more, he wouldn't sell his for less, etc. I replied that I wasn't saying his bike wasn't worth $200, but that he should start his auction with a lower opening bid offer.

I checked on the auction today and his bike sold for $330.69.

$330 for that POS is a hella high price. It's not worth more than $50.
That saddle and bag are obviously vinyl, not leather. Buyer could claim misrepresentation.
I realize that vintage bikes are popular and that supply and demand dictate price, but that was a low-end cheap bike when it was new - and that doesn't change with time.

I can't say that he'd have got my 330. but hey...more power to him. There's one born every day. :rolleyes:

Someone wanted it that bad, so that's the market.

ebay can do strange things. I sold some ski rack parts for $18 but it turned out the seller couldn't use them since they were the wrong model # for his vehicle. I took them back:crash:, re-listed them and got one bidder who got them for $0.99. Sort of the flip-side to this deal.

Everyone is wrong sometime, but it take a lot to admit that in pubic. You get my respect.:thumb:

Well, there were basically 2 bidders who really drove up the price. A third was in it for 1 bid. If you look you'll see the winning bidder had an 8 feedback. the # 2 guy had a 33. So, they were definitely new to ebay. IMO, you can't base the price on what those 2 guys bid.

The seller was just plain, flat out, hail-mary pass lucky. I would love to get that much for a bike of that 'quality', but I think I would almost feel guilty at that price.

Supply and demand...
 

Make no mistake about it, the price the fellow got for the Mixte Peugeot is not unusual these days. I have sold similar bicycles for the same amount. Two years ago I would not even drag a Mixte frame set home. Now days I jump at the chance to grab one. And I was lucky enough to keep a list of bicycles I have passed on. I went back and bought many of them last year now that they are worth a couple of hundred dollars or even more.

The vintage bike thing, thanks primarily to Ebay, is now at the mercy of supply and demand. The supply of vintage bicycles will not go up. But demand is skyrocketing! There will come a day when you and I will truly regret selling some of our POS bikes. At least that is what I believe.

And while on that topic, I think I will invite forum members to boo-hoo about the bikes that they wish they had not sold.

Someone paid it so yes, it was worth it.

I guess I'm with cb400bill on this one as I had negative things to say well. Not so much as if it would sell for more than his opening price of $200 but the opening price itself. There a bit of arrogance from the seller, "dont tell me, I know what these are worth". Ummm, no you dont or you wouldnt have posted here looking for advice.

I think if he'd stuck a $200 intial price on that bike he probably wouldn't have gotten a bid on it. I've been to so many auctions where people sat like stones as the auctioneer lowered the intial price until some point at which a bidder throws up his hand. They then proceed to go right past the inital asking price.

It's kind if like when I asked guys in here how much my one bike was worth and then I posted it on ebay. the listing is over now so I guess it won't hurt to give it. the guys on here said it was worth 200 to 300 dollars. it sold for $480 but I did start my bidding out at 299.99 no bids untill the last day.

oh I forgot to add that I made sure to wrap the tubes for shipping. I also used 2" stryofoam sheeting on the sides of the box. and somehow ups still messed it up. I could stand on the box and the stryofoam wouldn't move. they bent the fork and also messed up the rear drop outs. ups is to be sending me a check in the mail to refund the guys money. ups also told me to keep the bike for at least 3 days after I receive the check just in case they want to pick it up for salvage. I hope they don't I know I can repair it.

One of the points of my post was he did start the bidding at $200 and I told him it was a mistake.

Well, now you have to tell someone their bike is worth $330 and it sells for $50, and call it even.

And to @*!^# about the bikes they've built for girlfriends who never rode them and didn't remain girlfriends!!

I can't even sell Campy for a respectable price on e-bay! It makes me so upset to see people make huge profits on junk bikes. I'm always willing to negotiate prices below "market value" but I never seem to be able to turn high ten junkers into a couple hundred bucks.

Maybe I'm going to start selling high ten on the bay by the pound.

Sales extremes do not equal the norm - if the same bike sold on eBay for $25 next week, that would not be conclusive either. Now if you take the average of all the recent prices, you would have something a bit more reliable in terms of valuation.

It's quite a fine riding Peugeot UO-18 mixte. No, it's not high end Columbus, but the one Ive ridden on is very smooth without being slow, quick without being snappy. The most comfy mixte I've ridden.

Keep in mind you could offend someone with that post, and think before you type.

sounds to me like you didnt use any dropout savers. Those plastic or home made things that fit into the dropouts and keep them straight. That's pretty important when shipping a bike. I'd say you made out this time if UPS took fault but I'd def look into using those next time if you didnt.

at first ups didn't want to do anything about it. then I took photos of boot marks on the box. someone was standing on it looks like they were jumping on it. I called them up *****ing and then they took care of it.
