road steel -- true story
On Wednesday morning I was riding the Bianchi with my YMCA group. As I passed one of the ride leaders, a Brit, I told him, "You need Italian steel!" A moment later another guy on a gorgeous late 1970s Raleigh International passed both of us, and my friend called out, "No, you need English steel!" When I complimented the chap on his bike, he noted that he had bought it when he was 16.

They did know how to build. I was out over the weekend on my 1973 Gran Sport that I bought when I was about 16. The bike still has it, even if I don't.

It's always a thrill to see another steel classic when your out riding these days. A Bianchi and a Raleigh trading places at the front of a peleton would have been nice to see too.

No reason it wouldn't.
+1 on seeing classic bikes while riding.
Seeing a century group on a beat up Eddie, equally shabby Vitus, and a Colnago with almost no paint left is one thing, then watching them smoothly spin away from the crowd is even better.
And I got some feedback from a ride two weeks ago, heard about "those guys on the steel bikes" more than once, all in a positive light.
+1 on seeing classic bikes while riding.

I owned some english steel once. I had an old Royce Union. I broke the frame at the top of the downtube, just from riding it hard. I miss it, it was cool. Had a SA 3 spd hub too.

In the brevet series I've been riding, if you pass the ride leader you have to take the sign-in sheets and set them out at the stops. So there is some disincentive to going too fast.

I went "Fast" once,was 1968 if I rem correctly, lucky if I can get to the end of the street without falling off now !
