Miele Tivoli: Info Request

A friend wants to give me a Miele Tivoli which has been sitting in his garage for a while. I just went over and took a brief look at it. It looks like a well built bike. Columbus Matrix tubing (lower end?). Biopace chainrings. Shimano Exage 400EX components. 105 hubs. 700c. I'm guessing it's an early 90's bike. It's only 1 cm larger than my size (I ride a 56 Cross Check). Does anyone have any information on this model?

I will hopefully pick it up this afternoon and will have some photos up by the end of the day, as well as the serial number.

I got the bike this afternoon. I couldn't find a serial number on the frame, for some reason, but the date code on the RD is NG, which is Jul 1989.

Anyway. Here are some photos.

It looks bigger than a 57cm frame but it is great for free. Is it just your camera or is this bike day-glo orange? Is that seat leather? Nice.

Nice Miele, I'll look forward to seeing some photos when you get it cleaned up.

Yan, just caught your post in another thread. Sorry, I don't have 1989 literature. The interesting thing is that, with the exception of the rear derailleur, the components are Exage Sport and Sport LX. Sport LX was the predecessor to Exage 400EX and was made in 1988-1989, while the 400EX was introduced for the 1990 model year. So, the question is, is this a replacement rear derailleur, or did Miele have a lot of leftover Sport (LX) components? Certainly, the 1990 model is spec'd with a full 400EX group. BTW, it's definitely no older than 1989, as there was no Tivoli in 1988. What does appear apparent is that the wheels are replacements by virtue of the 105 hubs. Non-Ambrosio rims would confirm this, as Miele was using Ambrosio almost exclusively during this period. 1990 price was $500 US / $595 CDN.

Matrix was a mid-range, seamed butted, CrMo tubeset. Basically, it was an economical version of Columbus' highly regarded SL tubeset. By this time Matrix had been renamed Cromor, as the result of a Trek lawsuit for infringing on the brand name of their rims, so Miele must have had a lot of leftover stock or were very shoddy about rotating their tubing decals. I suspect the latter, as Cromor was spec'd in 1990 and even on 1988 models. Cromor was spec'd only for three main tubes. While the forks are CrMo (probably Japanese), the stays are hi-tensile steel.

Miele was certainly, um, avante-garde and experimental with their colour choices.

Hello all, great forum. I've spent a few days reading old posts. I just bought an 89 Miele Tivoli. 53cm frame. a previous owner has changed out some of the components and I would like to know what was original componets for the stem and bar. Cinelli? the front crank was swapped for a suntour superbe comp(mtn bike?)

I would like to put this bike back into a road configuration. not sure if I want to Restore it just make it better for long rides. possibly add brifters but keep the original brakes deraillers. I'm new to modern bikes(I had a Basso Bros. with Campy record gruppo back in the late 80's)
I've got nothing against friction shift except safety of being able to shift/brake with both hands on the bars. would anyone have recomendations on what brifters would work with my old exage 400ex? should I upgrade to 600 derailllers? witch ones. I'm fine with staying at 7 speeds. I would also like to return to a 2 cog crank set but I'm not crazy about the original Biopace stuff. recomendations?

Lots of questions I know. any help/ info would be appreciated. I tried to post a pic but it is not working.
