Almost a perfect day...
 

Forgive the typos as I am forced to type with my left hand...

I met Dyermaker and his amigo for the first time. Dyermaker bought the PX10 frame from me. Awesome that I could recoup some o my costs for building my PSV. Great guys and my day was going well.

Friends stopped by unexpectedlu and we lounge around wrenching on our bikes. Head out to a local taco joint which has the best carnitas ever!

We ride over to japantown to hang out a bit before we start heading home so I can get to bed and go to work the next day.

We're riding fairly fast on an empty downtown street when I end up hitting something on the road (pothole or something) forces my front end to twist left and I go flying over my bike to slam my right shoulder into the concrete doind a few slides and rolls... I go to the ER as I know my shoulder is shot and I'm praying I didn't break something.

after a hour in ER and $100 copay I leave with a seperated shoulder/torn ligament, road rash all over my arms and legs and a bottle o vicodin. I look at my Nishiki once I get home and the fork is trashed, the front wheel has a broken spoke, and there is probably more damage I don't see yet. My brooklyn jersey and shorts are also shot :(

Just had to vent a little... I'm just glad I didn't break anyithng even though my beloved Nishiki is down for the count

We made it home alive. I almost left my Ray-Bans on the grass in front of your place though ( we were back on the freeway by the time I noticed, luckily they were still there )

Not sure to be honest Margaret. I've never been in an accident where I actually damaged the integrity to the bike. I didn't see any damage except the fork. I searched for any wrinkles or bends but didn't find any. So it looks like I'll have to ind a new fork sometime. I just want to heal. I feel so caged up not being able to do anything.

How does a fork even bend like that without a collision? Unless my bike flipping and hitting the ground caused that mess...

I'd hate to see the road rash on you, considering what happened to the fork.

mama mia: thatsa wet noodle of a fork! I'll keep my eyes peeled for a replacement fork: how much steerer is ideal?

Is it a 56c bike? If so, I may have an actual black Tange chro-mo fork for it, but not crowned.

Post a closeup of the area just behind the headlugs. From the present photos, it appears intact with no wrinkles, as you describe - in which case, the frame should be fine.

That's seriously my favorite Nishiki. Check Soma Fabrications, they may have a fork like you need.

Sorry to hear about the accident. Our club wishes you a speedy recovery. When you are ready, we have an incredible LBS nearby that has a basement filled to the rafters with parts. A couple of my buddies and yours truly will go digging for a fork or more if you need it. Please let me know, and we'll start our search.

Really sorry to read about this, i'd offer the fork from my International but it's bent too.

The new one you just bought? :eek: I have a used but presentable one you can have - assuming the size is right and you don't mind a used jersey. :)

really sorry for your spill. I hope ur jersey and kits could somehow be mended!

looks like a new fork is all you would need but whether or not you are going to be comfortably confident on that bike is another story.

on the same note, with the group I ride with on weekends I hit the sharpest pothole ever on my 87-88 brava. It hit so hard my hand hurt from the drops coming up and hitting them from the impact. It thru off my pace and i pulled to check the integrity of the bike. Everything SEEMS okay, but I'll need a few more rides to gain my confidence.

I hit it straight on tho, and it didn't cause me to twist over..

Real sorry to hear that, and sorry about the damage to your bike. I'd guess the "collision" was with the pothole; you must have smacked it pretty good.

It's hard to count your blessings when your bike and shoulder are both trashed, but I know someone who took a similar spill, and after 2 years of rehab, he's walking with considerable difficulty, and that's considered something of a triumph by his doctors. So heal up, find a new fork, and be careful out there.

Ouch. I did something similar with my Nishiki. The front fork wasn't bent near as much but the frame was trashed. As I recall, the bent frame didn't jump out at me all at once; it was only after the paint started coming off (which wasn't right away) that I realized it was bent. Look for a buckled area on the bottom of the down tube just behind the head tube lug. Good luck; I hope the Nishki lives.

And I hope you heal up good too.

Thanks everyone for the support and well wishes. The more I get to think about it the more I see that I was lucky despite hurting my shoulder.

Easthill, Unworthy1, gomango, BBM, thanks for the offers. If the frame is still ok and your offers still stand I'll reach out to you guys for some help acquiring/installing a fork in the near future after I heal up (hopefully quickly).

Here are some quick pics of the headtube lugs. I felt around for wrinkles at the bottom of the downtube but won't know for sure until I'm more mobile an can thoroughly check it out.

It looks as if the frame survived without a kink in sight.

Yes, I don't see any obvious or not so obvious damage.

You are lucky it wasn't much worse (and I mean damage to you, physically).

Ouch. I took my first spill in about forever last year. The result wasn't as drastic, but I remember how much it sucked to be sitting around in discomfort, not feeling safe to go for a ride. Maybe deep down it still affects me, since I haven't been out near as much this year as last. Hopefully the only scars you'll carry are that jersey and an empty bottle of vicodin.

Anyhow, heal up, and spend a lot of time here :D.

p.s. - are you still looking for a crankset for the Peugeot? I was supposed to send you pictures, but we had a lot of things happen here (my 17 y.o. blew out his ACL a little over a month ago), and I spaced it out. It came back to me when I read your post.

It was pretty obvious even before the paint flaked off.

@ USAZorro No worries. I actually bought a PX-10 from retyred as a donor bike so I'm only missing very small parts... and my shoulder.

@ Doohickie thanks for the pic. After I'm more mobile and off the vicodin I'll give the Nishiki a good inspection to make sure it's not damaged anywhere else
