Memorial Day

When you get in a crowd this weekend, look around at the 18-21 year old kids around you.

Note the ones whose names you know, their parents, siblings, friends.

Imagine what a hole their loss would leave in their communities', friends', and families' lives.

And think about the ones that are actually gone, the gaping holes they left.

And all they ask is that they be remembered once a year.

No problem.

I don't forget about them a single day of the year. Those who die for a cause they believe in, in service to those who will likely forget them, they have my eternal respect. There are proud people out there, those who forego fame and glory so that their friends and families may have a future worth living, and home worth living in. It matters not where they come from, may it be America or another country, they died for what they believed in. Their struggle, their loss, it will never be forgotten by me.
May God bless their souls...

We are taking our boys to a World War II exhibit at the Minnesota History Center. They are going to have a World War II airplane flyover for Memorial Day. They also have an exhibit on Minnesota's Greatest Generation. The kids need to know why the day is so important!

I talked to a man today that lost both his brothers within eight months in 1968.
They were in the service; one in action in Vietnam, one in an accident in Korea.

It's always a very somber day for me. It's become even more so over the last few years with so many of our young people locally who are serving. We also have a Guard unit who has deployed.

Monday morning I'll be pedaling downtown to "Olde City Park" for the ground breaking ceremony for our town's new Veterans Memorial. The guest speaker is an 83 yr old WWII Vet and we're fortunate to have some of our younger service men and women who are currently home and able to be there.
