Shimano 200gs Upgrade

I am rebuilding an early 90s Peugeot Anaconda MTB. It was fitted with a Shimano 200gs groupset - 21 speed with STI shifters. I will be reusing everything except the Biopace chainset and bottom bracket which are damaged.

I need to know if it is ok to replace the chainset with a modern one? I have been looking at the Shimano Alivio models. Would this be compatible with the 200gs rear and front derailleur and 7 speed hyperglide cassette. The Biopace had rings of 48, 38 and 28, the Alivio has 42, 32, 22 (a 48, 38, 28 model is available). I may upgrade the rest of the groupset in the future when things wear out/finances allow.

The other thing is that the spindle on the old crank was 122mm long (frame width 68mm). Does the spindle on the new BB have to match this or do I go for whatever length is recommended for the Alivio?

My other option is to buy a new/old Biopace SG, Exage 500 LX which I have found on ebay.

Buy the Exaage. The other ones use riveted chainrings and are really cheap. Good luck
