yard sale puch worth it
Hey everyone i was driving around today and i have a eye for bikes cause i got the bike bug anyways to the point i foung three road bikes a huffy 10 or 12 speed 626 i believe for 30 mind you the wholedrivetrain needs work rusted tires air rotted bike made in usa so is thhis a steel bike think im passing but i walked up to this red bike called a Puch it was fairly nice shape didnt see any style like cavalier or brigadire i did see that on the seat tup it says made in japan they want 40 for it it need new tires and a good lubing its probably a little small but i would like to get it ans eventually put all new components on it
thanks for any help and info i just dont want to spend 40 dollars on it and find out that no new parts will fit on it btw it has sr suntour components as in r/d shifters and it was a 10 spd i think |

Puch made bikes that went across the board. Some used plain ole' gas pipe and cheap components. Others used really good stuff. My father's 1973 Puch that he gave me has a Reynolds 531 frame! |
I loved my Austro-Daimler (parent company of Puch) that was Reynolds 531

On the Puch: rarely worth it if you have to put all new components on it. You are better off finding a complete bike with the components you want. Or find a donor bike with the components you prefer, and swap them out between the two bikes, and sell the one with the components you don't like. This assumes you do all the work yourself, as it will cost way too much to do a complete swap on two bikes if you have to pay someone to do it.
If you are desirous of building a bike with certain high end grade of components, you are best off with the best frame you can find (at an acceptable cost of course). It takes just as much time and effort to build up a low end frame as it does to build a high end frame. Note, that some Puch frames are high end, but without pics, I would not assume it is. I would shoot for a higher end Tange frame, Reynolds, or something similar. |

Even the cheaper Japanese Puch's (pronounced POOOO-K - more an 'O' sound than 'Puck' as many say it) are cult-bikes. And are well worth acquiring. Even a cheaper one - like what you described - can be slowly re-built as parts come your way. The Royal Family members with high-end tubing, such as Reynold's 531, are well worth spending good coin to bring back. I'd ride them before you decide to sell them. I've met a whole string of people who see my Puch A-D and tell me how they had one. But they got rid of it - and doing so was something they still regret to this day!

No matter what you do to the Huffy, it will still be a Huffy. I wouldn't give $0.15 for one.

$40 for a Japanese Puch in good shape? I say take it. Probably standard threaded and easy to replace parts. This is the kind of bike you buy, and sell for even a bit more if you end up not liking it.

A Puch is NOT a Huffy. Puch did make bikes for SEARS. The old Free Spirits. Even these were a cut above. A search of these forums will find at least one of these that you might just wet your pants over.

My son-in law claims PUCH was a misprint, and should have been PUSH because that's what he always ended up doing.
I've always liked them though, My criteria is that for anything over $30 it has to be able to be ridden away, unless it is something special or has very nice components. Ken. |
