Is it a total sin to want carbon fiber?
I'm idly thinking about changing out my crank and deraillers with the Campy chorus stuff that is half alloy, half carbon. I need a compact double, and since I already have an out-of-place looking Veloce on there, I thought the blackened carbon would look much better, and maybe be a little lighter, too.
It sounds sacrilegious. I'm glad there aren't any, like, pastors who could send me to hell on this forum.
But I'm starting to have trouble resisting the temptation. If you're going modern, might as well go really nice modern.

I don't think it's too horrible. I would go all silver if it matches the bike though, that rules out carbon. If you're going with a square taper, you might as well.

Carbon has it's ministry also.

I have broken two aluminum cranks and one cottered steel crank. Although the two spindle eye failures were not dangerous in any way, the pedal eye rupture did throw me to the ground on an out-of-saddle climb. Do we know enough about carbon cranks at this point to compare their reliability to aluminum's admittedly imperfect record?

On C&V? Who'd a thunk.

Let's see what pastorbob has to say.
I wouldn't be concerned about our opinions, since it would be yourself, not a pastor who would send you to a smokin' eternity.
Seriously though, I can appreciate the attraction, but I know I have the strength to stand true to the faith.

BLASPHEMER!!!!! The wreaking fires of hell await you!!! You are henceforth from this sub-forum until you have repented in full and begged for our forgiveness!!!
Just kidding, of course. What someone else does to their own bike is their own business, I say.

Applied sparingly it'll be OK. [I have a carbon FSA on my single speed]
When I pulled the thread up I thought you were going to say you were buying a full carbon bike

Carbon fibre on racing sailboat hulls and masts it's leading edge.
Good for race Cars, F1 etc.
Airplanes, good, unless you are Airbus recently.
Bikes?
Feeling a little pressured by your riding buddies?

Uh...don't tell her I said that.
No - it's really just looks. As I said, I have the modern crank/derailleur on there now. I just don't like how it looks. It looks like some Alien-inspired crap. The Chorus is identical, but the black details seem to distract me from that crappy organic curviness that all the modern stuff has.
I remember being aghast with cars when they first got 'aerodynamic' in the 80s. Aerodynamic, to me, means nothing but tailfins, and maybe a lady with wings on the hood.

well you've started with a bike that has Veloce on it, so the CF Chorus isn't too far
a step.
I'd offer a word of caution, I think CF is like Crack... once you get started.
the only real blasphemy would be if you're putting that on a Cali-Masi, or old De Rosa or similar,
then even Pastor Bob couldn't help you.
Marty
a step.

You should, however, become acquainted with that interesting and informative website known as Busted Carbon.
https://www.bustedcarbon.com/2009/06/...-crankset.html
But who am I to talk? I just built up a Cannondale CAAD 4 with a CF Slice front fork. I might have to join you in eternal damnation.

Just replace the fancy name: carbon; with the real name: PLASTIC. I think that will help guide you on such a decision.

OK, while we're admitting, I'm currently fixing and flipping whatever I can find to get a Trek Pilot 2.3 (aluminum w/carbon fork and stays) on the road. Hopefully before the end of the season.
Hey, I love carbon fiber. I used to work for Ducati.

well, I don't know about the pastors sending you anywhere, but I like the carbonLORD stuff, and it's cheaper than what you're looking at. as far as black FD/RD, I'd use what works.

Well, I think Spinz outfitted a Raleigh Team Pro in new modern carbon. I imagine it looks like Rita Hayworth in Victoria's Secret. Era's clash, but who's noticing?

Read below and you'll find the differance between CF and plain ole plastic. Then you can choose to have a part built of "plastic" or CF.
"Carbon fiber (alternatively called carbon fibre, graphite fiber, graphite fibre or carbon graphite) is a material consisting of extremely thin fibers about 0.005–0.010 mm in diameter and composed mostly of carbon atoms. The carbon atoms are bonded together in microscopic crystals that are more or less aligned parallel to the long axis of the fiber. The crystal alignment makes the fiber very strong for its size. Several thousand carbon fibers are twisted together to form a yarn, which may be used by itself or woven into a fabric.[1] Carbon fiber has many different weave patterns and can be combined with a plastic resin and wound or molded to form composite materials such as carbon fiber reinforced plastic (also referenced as carbon fiber) to provide a high strength-to-weight ratio material. The density of carbon fiber is also considerably lower than the density of steel, making it ideal for applications requiring low weight.[2] The properties of carbon fiber such as high tensile strength, low weight, and low thermal expansion make it very popular in aerospace, civil engineering, military, and motorsports, along with other competition sports."

BTW, we didn't learn a thing about CF in seminary. Or did I sleep through that class?
Here's a little tidbit: The word "carbon" does not appear in the Bible, and "fiber" only appears once!
In Judges 16:9 we read; "While men were lying in wait in an inner chamber, she said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” But he snapped the bowstrings, as a strand of fiber snaps when it touches the fire. So the secret of his strength was not known."

there isn't any plastic in carbon fiber parts. They do look like plastic though.

Lusting for carbon's not a sin, just a bit ****** -- like the girl you dreamed of dating in high school until you did, and found out that she was somewhat crude and no fun to talk to.
