1974 Schwinn Continental Questions

I recently picked up a 1974 Kool Lemon Color Schwinn Continental. It is my first road bike and was working great till today. I mainly have four questions, is there a company that sells cable that fit into the suicide levers? The ones I picked up are far too round and stick out. My second question, I lost the --lack of a better description hollow donut shaped washer with a hole in the side-- piece for the back derailleur cable. Does this affect anything? Can I just use the nut already there to secure it? Should I get a replacement piece? (I am debating doing a full restore.) My second to last question is with the gears? How far down should the lever be to have the chain on the biggest back gear?
And finally what is the best way to touch up the kool lemon paint job?
Thanks.

Perhaps this should be moved to the Bicycle Mechanics forum instead?
