Vitus 979 Fork - dangerous?
 

Just checking here....I have been looking for a bargain on one of these interesting (to me at least) Vitus lugged aluminum bikes for a while & found one in town & my size....and relatively cheap. I was pretty certain from my earlier research that barring obvious lug bonding failures there were no real safety issues particular to these bikes. Now, however, I found some stuff on the road forum about the forks having been recalled for coming unbonded...ie, another kind of 'death fork.' Does anyone here know anything about this? and, if it's true, how can you tell if your fork is one that was recalled (other than that it's broken in pieces...lol). And, yes, photos of the bike are pending.

I raced one for two years BITD without any problems.

I'd too like to know if these fail, since I've only heard storys and not see any proof. I love climbing on my vitus 979, but the high speed decents are really scary and I keep a hand on the bars at all times because if I ride no handed the front end can wobble.

I'm pretty enthused about trying the bike out...haven't actually ridden it yet....likely needs a new chain...don't know yet if it's worn/rusty or just rust "tinted" from storage and lack of use.

this one's bit fit with bar end twist/grip shifters (not the modern SRAM/mtn bike stuff, I think) and (assuming I don't like those...never seen that particular setup on a bike) I will likely be looking into either STIs or bar-end levers for shifting.
