I am selling a gorgeous 54cm Bianchi road bike in excellent condition. Rides like a dream. Nary a scratch or blemish on the frame.

-Shimano 600 groupset, succeeded modern-day Ultegra
-Lightweight Italian Columbus tubing. Google it if you don't know.
-All cables and housing in great shape, freshly tuned
-700c wheelset , so plenty of options for tires

Price is negotiable, but I will ignore you if I've gotten a better offer. Is haggling over 40 bucks worth missing out on the bike of a lifetime? You must pick this up at my workshop in Dorchester, near Fields Corner.

^ Comment might make for a great thread topic. Economics and the limited market for builders (especially small or start-ups) dictates whether they survive. I don't have a clue what the net cost was for Schwinn making that frame back when but for filet brazed, special tube stock, labor intensive, might not have been good business sense for them. Although being a giant of the industry, of course offered everything including large volume, that little corner of history of Paramount tandems might not have mattered much.

However I do know my early Santana is a helluva quality build and rides like it. For vintage, its a silky sled and climbs like a goat. Exclusive specially made tubing per their spec, trick boom tube, etc.. But had they continued with the model things might be different for them today. Confidential discussion and what was shared with me, I don't think any builder would consider going in that build / construction method as a regular model offering.

It varies a little by brand and model (I like the town n countries, and have heard good things about Jack Taylor's), but generally Id agree with the tandem forum...OS tubes, aluminum, indexed shifting and longer stoker positions are good things. I have ridden (stoker and captain) a paramount tandem and didn't think much of it.

I think Santanna and Bilenky really had a positive influence on the development of tandems.

My theory is that Santana and Burley were pretty devastated by the market entry of Trek and Cannondale. This based on that most Santanas and Burleys I see for sale are late-Suntour vintage. Very hard for a cottage industry to compete at the same price, so they have to differentiate themselves with substantially superior products and that winds up costing even more. Santana makes a very hard sell on its website that they have long been the innovation leader in tandems and they have a lot of cool features, so you expect that along the way they have also tried a lot of things that didn't pan out.

Just like the never ending debate with some talking bikes... modern CF vs. steel blab, this that. And just like tandems, there's a wide variety of type and application. The talk of what one does or rides vs. another is doubling troubling. Can't forget about the stoker.

A few weeks ago I came across a couple on their vintage Paramount tandem. Neat to see them using it, regardless. Anyways, it had the 'S' tube stoker seat tube. Made me think of a website and some fellow having a '47 Claud Butler with this design. Made for multi duty including track racing.

Don't overlook Puch's there were some very nice ones. When I was 14 or 15 I had one of these that I bought used for $15 if I remember correctly; see: https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2007/...8cec13c662.jpg this one pictured is a 1960, mine was either a 1960 or a 61, the picture looks the same as mine from what I can recall except mine was a 10 speed. I wish I had that bike today.

Interesting old bike. Doesn't look like anything to write home about, but it has Reynolds tubing (looks like 531) and the price is right.

At least it doesn't have gas pipes.
