Even without the Carpenter-Phinney connection that is not a bad price for a full SR outfitted Basso. Here is a photo with the bike maybe?

One problem with buying an old bike from a well-known pro racer is, you can bet it has NOT been lightly ridden.

I emailed him since its my size. ' would have coughed up $500 for it, but I did not feel like driving too far to get it. Good thing I didn't, as I am sure he would have raised the price once I get there.

I've actually got a 753 SBDU Raleigh Connie had, and my understanding is that some of these bikes were built by Marinoni. I was under the impression that the Olympic bike was a Marinoni.

Note that the Basso doesn't have a number hanger, so it's not "that" bike.

I think the price is pretty favorable...like you said, the parts alone. D1 is right that the bikes were often ridden hard, but it is fun to have one with provenance.

Vintage 80's Trek 520 road bike

Couple sizes too small or I'd make the 150 mile roundtrip to check it out.

I noticed that but I don't see one in the photo above either. Could the number be attached with a zip tie? Maybe the one for sale is a training bike? I believe that the bike for sale probably is hers; I can't imagine someone rebadging a Basso and then applying the 'patina' to try and defraud someone.

Very cool that you have one of her bikes; definitely a piece of history to enjoy! Even though the bikes were ridden hard, I imagine they were well maintained as well.

I wasn't questioning the integrity of the ad. Like you said, that would be a lot of work to go through for a $850 asking price. I checked google and the one in your photo is, I believe, Marinoni built:

Raleigh Racing USA Team Frames

I think they were Columbus SL. It may have been a training bike, she may have liked it and had it painted. Who knows. I would guess it's a frame she rode and had painted rather than coming through team channels.

Riders would often give the frames to their coaches and equipment managers as tips when they got new bikes...from there they were sometimes sold at swaps or through shops.

This one is 753:

I didn't go period or parts correct because I've wanted to try Superbe Pro and it seemed like a good platform. I need a 26.8 superbe pro seatpost.

crank is c-record. Probably a mix...subbing out chorus for deltas was common. Can't tell the derailleur from the photos.
